Split infinitives

I see that you've made a particular point of removing split infinitives from Wikipedia. I'd like to draw your attention to the Split infinitive article, and particularly the sections on Current views and Avoiding split infinitives, which explains in some detail why split infinitives are not always objectionable and can even aid readability. Having looked through your contributions I would personally support about one-third of such edits, but I also disagree with about one-third, as I think they have the potential to trip up modern day readers, and I noted a couple of edits that are outright poor:

1 "..the camp was intended to exclusively hold female inmates." → "..the camp was intended exclusively to hold female inmates."

I think the phrase "intended exclusively" sounds like nonsense. Perhaps a better compromise would have been "..the camp was intended to hold female inmates exclusively."

2 "..has been created by fans who wish to collectively purchase the building.." → "..has been created by fans who wish collectively to purchase the building.."

I doubt very much that the fans did their wishing collectively. It was of course the purchasing that they wished to do collectively.

Perhaps in future before following your compulsion to edit any and all split infinitives you encounter you might stop and think about whether there is any benefit in doing so. Sincerely, nagual design 23:55, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
