January 2013[edit]

Hello, I'm Sagaciousphil. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to American Bulldog because it appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to American Bulldog. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. SagaciousPhil - Chat 14:31, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

sorry Im new to this and have just seen your messages, there is alot of information on the site i keep adding about the breed the standards aswell as an interview with johnson him self, what should i do, just put all the info on wiki then or do i link to it,with refrences, its also a website that people can join and upload pics of their dogs as well as sharring knowledge and ideas and training tips
Hi Brettstan, First of all, welcome to Wikipedia!
Thanks for getting in touch about the website link you've been trying to add to the American Bulldog article. Unfortunately the policy does not allow links to personal and/or breeders websites, especially if they are selling puppies; I see you have a litter of pups prominently advertised on your website landing page and three are available at 2 January 2013. So I'm afraid the link will keep being removed. SagaciousPhil - Chat 15:04, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers for the guidance, will bare that in mind in future, could I put links to dog shows and events, I was also going to add things about diet and nutritional needs for american bulldogs
Hello again Brettstan, Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, so no you can't include any links to dog shows or events and most definitely not to a website to sell dog feed - you will see I have even deleted the website address you included in your post above. Wikipedia must not be used to promote or sell anything. Policy is also very explicit about it not being a forum, so with the best will in the world it will be almost impossible for you to manage to include these links at all. We do not even allow breeder websites to be used as references as it would not be considered a reliable source.
If you have any books that are not self published then these would be able to be used as references, as I see the article is certainly in need of a lot of work and appears to lack citations of any kind.
By the way, please 'sign' any posts on talk pages, you just insert ~~~~ at the end and also indent responses by putting in colons - one colon indents for first reply, two for second response etc etc. You may notice I've moved the comments above across.
I know Wikipedia can seem very daunting to start with but we're usually pretty patient about things
I look forward to seeing any improvements you make to the article!
If there is anything else you want to ask or if I can be of any further help, just ask on this page on my talk page.
There is also the Teahouse where very experienced, helpful editors are able to promptly answer all sorts of questions so never be afraid to pop over there and ask stuff. SagaciousPhil - Chat 16:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops! There you go, it just goes to show that we can all make mistakes - the link above should be to the Teahouse not an article page about Tea Houses/rooms - apologies! SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:32, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again yes your right is a little daunting, did you remove the picture that I put on? or has somebody else done this, also the main picture for the american bulldog is a thawn colour, which doesnt reflect the general look or standard of the breed, when it was first registerd with the animal research federation the colour was 90% white as they originated from the old white Bulldog, over the years people have been putting out crosses in the bloodlines and changing the breed can i change this picture?? UserTalk:Brettstan

Hi, no, it looks as if the photo was removed due to a copyright violation - if you click the 'View History' tab at the top of the article page you can see who has made the changes. Perhaps when you uploaded the image you didn't give it the correct license? It looks as if the main picture was changed in September last year, the previous picture was the one shown here?

Grand Champion Ozzy

Normally preference is given to a standing shot taken much as the positioning of the fawn currently depicted and it's better if there isn't a lot of 'clutter' in the background. Although I've left the picture here with the caption of the dog's name included in the caption, it would have to be taken out if used in the article. If you have a better picture of a dog in the correct position (without websites etc stamped on to it ), you can alter it - anyone can edit Wikipedia! If you are unsure how to do it and need some help, just ask either me or the guys over at the Teahouse. You'll notice I've taken our conversation back to the left side of the screen, so any reply will be back to using one set of colons again now! SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:22, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

thanks again for your guidance its much appreciated, I've got a better picture but not sure if the image is the right size or quality

An American Bulldog
let me know what you think regards--Brettstan (talk) 10:35, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Brettstan! The image looks okay to me - by the way, I've changed the format on this talk page to a 'thumb' so it displays better on this page. It's quite simple to add it to the article but if you need any help with it, just give me a shout again. I suggest leaving the caption to just read 'An American Bulldog' as it is at the moment so it remains generic.
Do you happen to have any books on the breed that could be used as references as I see someone has littered the article with 'citation needed' tags? SagaciousPhil - Chat 11:14, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again would you mind changing the image for me then, I wouldnt want to get it wrong, yes I have few books on the breed I will get my head in them again prob be the weekend before i get chance if I'm honest, I've also got a copy of an interview with JD Johnson that can be found on the ARF website that has some interesting info,[[1]]

hope that link works still getting the hang of wiki--Brettstan (talk) 11:56, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed the info box photo for you! I'll have a proper look at the link you've given to the interview later but yes, you've linked it correctly as I was able to access it! SagaciousPhil - Chat 18:09, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
