How do you make changes to outdated information without it being undone by unknown forces?

October 2010[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I notice that you removed topically-relevant content from Christopher G. Donovan. However, Wikipedia is not censored to remove content that might be considered objectionable. Please do not remove or censor information that directly relates to the subject of the article. You have the option to configure Wikipedia to hide images that you may find offensive. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Ian.thomson (talk) 17:59, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just curious[edit]

Would you happen to work for or with, or happen to be Christopher G. Donovan? Ian.thomson (talk) 18:20, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I work for the Connecticut House Democrats Office. I am looking to update existing Wiki pages on our members and create new ones for the legislators that don't have one. I was trying to remove the Feb. 2009 line as outdated with a reference link that was broken. Who decides what facts to place and can they ever be removed? Speaker Dononva would like to add information to his Wiki page. I understand the need for third party references. Should I make changes one fact at a time to see if it makes it? If I make mulitple changes at once, will they all be rejected if one or two don't meet Wiki standards? I am just trying to get a handle on the restrictions. Thanks. We generally take and keep anything that has a reliable source and is notable. We tend not to remove information as "outdated", because then we'd have to get rid of the articles Mark Foley congressional page incident, Mark Sanford disappearance and extramarital affair, and Pat Robertson controversies, and those are just so much fun to laugh at. Regarding legislators that don't have pages, you will want to take a look at our notability guidelines. However, I have to leave this message:

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (CTHDO2010) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guideline to avoid editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block. -- Cirt (talk) 17:55, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I am new here and now understand your guidlines. I have stressed them to my people and have been working with them on encyclopedic information to be added to Christopher Donovan's page. I recently added a Family section without issue. I only wany to add more information. I am aware of the "conflict of interest" concern and will remain nuetral in tone.
