Ready for mainspace?

Images

AniRaptor2001, judging by your talk page you seem far more experienced with uploading and using images and dealing with WP image copyright policies than me. Can we upload and use this image under Iconography section? Regards, Cinosaur (talk) 05:46, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, we're only able to upload images that aren't in the public domain under the terms of "fair use", which can only be called on if a comparable free image cannot be obtained. I have some reservations with the policy, but it keeps wikipedia out of legal issues, so it does have its uses. Because comparable free images of hindu deities are available on the commons, (such as the one of Rama, at right), we're limited to using those. Works of art (such as every image on the page you linked to) are especially difficult, because unless they were created many years ago (usually after the death of the artist, plus a certain number of years depending on the jurisdiction), they are not in the public domain; they can only be used under fair use if the subject of the article is the work itself, and only a low-resolution reproduction of the work will serve to properly illustrate the subject matter. This is why we can use screenshots of Avatar (copyrighted material) in the article about the film. AniRaptor2001 (talk) 06:58, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. What about the image off this page, which bears more resemblance with the Avatar theme than the one you found. It is lifted off the same site but has embedded credits. I recommend having a read of these pages:

[1] and [2]. Basically, the image is either usable in Wikipedia under fair use, or it is public domain/released under a free distribution license and can be uploaded to the Commons. If neither criteria is satisfied, then we can't use the image. Keep in mind that ownership of a work of art, (or hosting an image file) doesn't confer ownership of copyright, which is what Wikipedia is concerned with.AniRaptor2001 (talk) 07:38, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It looks good Cinosaur, well-written and comprehensively sourced. One observation in "Religion and Spirituality": Avatar's director John Boorman quoted a similar distinction as one of the key factors contributing to its success: - John Boorman didn't direct Avatar, and I don't think he was involved in the production at any level.
