Hello, Coffeecat1, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. Rape kit

[edit]

Hi, Coffeecat! I know I'm a few months late, but WELCOME to Wikipedia! I want to thank you for jumping in to help edit the rape kit article ([1], [2], [3]).

However, I notice that a citation of this "What is the Rape Kit Backlog?" page on End the Backlog website, which accompanied much of the material you added, makes no mention of much of it. Specifically, does not feature any information that supports the following passages:

  • Research has shown that SANEs increase prosecution rates because of their training in evidence collection and investigation.
  • In addition to this, the examiner will swab for skin cells and hair by swabbing the victim's genitalia, anus, mouth, and skin.
  • All injuries as a result of the attack are documented.
  • "Forensic scientists can use the evidence collected by the SAKs to form a unique DNA profile for the perpetrator, which can help identify the perpetrator.

If I am mistaken, and this information is found in those sources, I apologize. Please let me know if I missed it.

In addition, in this specific edit you added a paragraph of information on Indiana, accompanied by cites of two sources: the aforementioned End the Backlog webpage, and a ref name tag named "IndianaBacklog". However, no information at the former mentions Indiana, and you never provided the publication info that should be in the first cite of the latter. I have removed this info, but if this was a mistake, and you wish to restore it, please feel free to do so, but only if it is accompanied by citations that support the information.

I hope you don't think that I'm coming down too hard on you; I know you're new to the project, and don't want to discourage you. Two significant passage you added, one on the two causes of the backlog, and the other on the tracking system, were ROCK SOLID, and I thank you for adding those! They definitely help the article. So I hope you continue your work here. I'd like to you help you out, so if you ever have any other questions about editing, or need help regarding the site's policies, just let me know by leaving a message for me in a new section at the bottom of my talk page.

Some minor tips that may help your edits:

  • You don't have to put individual citations of the same source after each sentence of a paragraph if the sentences are consecutive and one source supports them all. One cite of the source at the end of the final sentence is enough. See WP:REPCITE for more on this.
  • Sections are divided into subsections when that section has grown large enough that dividing it makes it easier to organize. One section cannot be divided into only one subsection.
  • Always keep in mind that material added to an article should be directly relevant to that article's subject. A paragraph on celebrity survivors of rape that makes no mention of rape kits isn't really relevant to an article on rape kits. (I once asked the editing community here if we should have an article or category on such persons, and I learned that the community was against it.)
