Biography

[edit]

After working at McDonalds for two years, Babensee decided to study art; his new-found passion. When he was in his early 20's he attended Brock University and Majored in Drawing and Painting. He always helped out at the local Big Black Pig Studio. Babensee usually ether silk-screened for the kids, or helped them paint. Teachers at Brock University referred to Babensee as a "new Rapheal." Eventually after graduation, he landed several successful jobs as an art teacher. When Babensee turned 30 years old he got a job at the public high school Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School (Waterloo). He was inspired by his student, Ryan Cort, into submitting some of his paintings into the Conestoga Art Museum. His painting, "Orange Self Portrait", was very popular, and was even featured in Hipster Magazine.

Babensee is often compared to Andy Warhol for his 'ground-breaking' new art ideas. His most famous work "Orange Self Portrait" has been featured on the news station, CKCO, numerous times. He had also had a whole series of muscle themed paintings.[1] In September 2010, those paintings were sold at Columbia Lake Health Club. As of October 21, 2002, the city of Waterloo recognizes Todd Babensee as a true Canadian Artist.

The art critic Ryan Johnson wrote in 2003 that[2]
