June 2024
[edit]Hello, I'm MichaelMaggs. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Eggcorn, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. MichaelMaggs (talk) 07:53, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
On the Use of "'s"
[edit]I currently stand by my reverting of your change, but swaying my opinion might be possible. :-)
> 1. this isn't pluralisation but a genitive;
You are correct. I used the wrong word despite referencing a material which actually used the correct word.
> 2. common nouns ending in -s take a genitive in -s', proper nouns take -s's;
What style guides are you using? I referenced Purdue OWL when I reverted your change.
> 3. nouns in -s form plurals in -es.
You are correct.

- Have you seen English possessive? Also, why would you default to an obscure American university style guide instead of the standard English usage? – Dyolf87 (talk) 09:36, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- > Have you seen English possessive?
- I have. As of the twenty-eighth day of July of 2024, the article contains the following sentence: Singular nouns ending in s also form a possessive regularly by adding 's, as in Charles's /ˈtʃɑːrlzɪz/ or boss's.
- > Also, why would you default to an obscure American university style guide [...]
- In my experience as an opinionated grammarian, Purdue OWL has been a pretty good resource and tends to highlight differences and similarities between popular style guides. I was actually going to mention that the APA style guide offers a similar recommendation for possessives for singular nouns which end in "s", but Purdue OWL already mentioned this fact.
- > [...] instead of the standard English usage?
- What is the standard English usage? What is standard English, anyway? Andrewchawk (talk) 02:40, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Also, I just encountered Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Possessives and was reminded of this exchange. Andrewchawk (talk) 10:58, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Tour dates in About Face (album) article
[edit]Please stop adding in tour dates into the article, as that need to be in its own article, not in an article about a studio album. It is considered undue weight per WP:UNDUE, as well to note that filling it in would be WP:INDISCRIMINATE. In regards to the tour, it is supported by a single source, which is not enough to make that section in particular notable, see WP:NTOUR. HorrorLover555 (talk) 13:12, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
