H2O RFA

I saw you just changed your vote because you now consider the process an immoral farce. Before you changed your vote, your last comment was directed to me. I understand that my initial response to your point about canvassing was aggressive, but I thought that we had resolved the misunderstanding. I sincerely hope nothing I wrote was responsible for your changing your vote. Slrubenstein | Talk 18:31, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

No, no, absolutely not. You were not to blame at all. As far as I'm concerned that situation was resolved amicably, and I apologise for any misunderstanding there. I am however somewhat fed up with the many accusations and counter-accusations made at the RfA but most of all the behaviour of the nominator, which makes me feel very uneasy. Regards, EJF (talk) 18:44, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, I owe you an apology too but I am glad that it is all sorted out as you say, amicably. I have not followed the behavior of the nominator closely, but obviously you care about the process ... you might want to give the nominator some constructive advice. Best, Slrubenstein | Talk 09:37, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Re: Bot

I was wondering when someone would take me to task about that. After encountering 3 edit conflicts in a row -- which meant I almost lost everything I had spent almost an hour writing twice -- I lost my patience. However, there is something pathologically wrong with a discussion when anyone needs to resort to such a tactic. If this is the only way anyone can be heard on Wikipedia any more, maybe I ought to give up on it. I apologize for the inconvenience. -- llywrch (talk) 20:01, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Gestiès. 10 people. Speedy? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:59, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I know believe me I'd rather we just went ahead. Where we differ I think is that we think new stubs with an infobox on locations and a map is an actual step forward whereas other think the eneyclopedia is better off for not recogniozing them. I guarantee the articles could all be expanded eventually, the problem though is accessing the information and indeed the time to do so. There aren't really that many editors like us who care about other countries and would be willing to expand them so even if we manange to develop thousands, many more would be left. It sucks I know that many people choose to only focus on Anglo-Centric articles but whoever said life was fair. Given the scale of this project if eahc person but just a few minutes of time into each one created we'd be rocking. But they won't and the encyclopedia will continue to grow unevenly. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

If we are to make 1000 a cut off point, the best thing we can do I think is to create lists of these places by district/province in the mainspace of villages and have information in tables and the wiki min atlases globes in the tables and create redirects. At least this way the wikipedia would recognize every place but would be contained in a table until more info could be found to start them. At least the tables then would convey some info on them until there is enough to create full article. I know its a little like winning bronze but at least wikipedia would recognize 2 million places and have some osr tof reference on their locations or basic statistics. Kind of like List of United Kingdom locations: Aa-Ak for every country. Just a thought ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Some more Burkina work now? They can't tag our articles for having population figures then!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:59, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Well I know, I hope it can work itself out. Firts I think I'll start an article on Child labor in Mali having found some sources. WOuld be a good idea starting an African series on it as from an economical and sociological viewpoint it is very important in Africa. I'll join you afteerwards. On second thoughts the data is 20-30 years out of date. Best leave that ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:08, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

A present

The Burkina Faso Barnstar
Just to say thanks for your much needed work on Burkinabe geography. It is very much appreciated and your work in helping improve such areas of poor coverage and helping sort out the provinces and regions and settlements. It is also for supporting my and the bot's cause in general and being a nice chap. Cheers from the Bald One . (Note the barnstar is inside the flag, clever huh). ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:58, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Your're welcome. We also need to update Departments of Burkina Faso with the coorect links and we seme to have gained another 10 or 11 departments so the new ones need adding too as there seems to be more than 301 now. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:12, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 22:21, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I've bought a 450 page book on Burkina Faso!! Bradt guides to Niger, Sudan, Benin, Ghana and Gabon are also available. See if you can buy one of the books off ebay or something buy it now and we can start contrubting some useful to the stubs or start a few. If you and Editor of the wiki bought one of the books each from a different we'd be able to do stuff!! I;m going to see if I can get the one on Benin but am pretty strapped for cash! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:10, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes Niger would be an excellent choice given its size. Probably the poorest covered country on wiki is Guinea or Liberia something like that. But Niger or SUdan would be excellent, probably Niger would be good. I;ll try to get the Benin one too, hopefully Editor can get hold of one of Gabon/Sao Tome or Ghana. Hey I just started Media and telecommunications in Seychelles, I've got a book on the Seychelles! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:23, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Rollback for you alternate account

Yeah, go on then. I'll grant it. Tough call though ........ :) .... Pedro :  Chat  20:30, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Ha ha, as long as you have no problem giving rollback to an SPA :) Just found out that I have to wait until I'm autoconfirmed before I can use any automated tools, so it's going to be a sleeper sock for now ;-) Cheers, EJF (huggle) (talk) 20:38, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
User:SockOfPedro got rollback with 1 edit If I recall, so precedent is there. Legitimate and declared socks of admins and well established editors who already have rollback should just be given the tool IMHO. Pedro :  Chat  20:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Now that was rouge... just kidding, I've seen that sort of thing before. Oops, just realised I need to do 10 edits as well as 4 days service, off to do some old-school patrolling (for the first time since I joined...) EJF (huggle) (talk) 20:48, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
If I was feeling sarcastic, I'd say that as your alternate account just has to make 10 edits, even ones without value, then there's another venue here for them as well..... :) Pedro :  Chat  20:54, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Ah, the forum that is a bottomless pit for endless, rambling discussion and proposals that never reach consensus :-) Proposing a new colour for the tally box could pull me closer to being autoconfirmed ... ;-) On a more worrying note, it's impossible to do manual recent changes patrol anymore; everytime I click rollback it says "rollback failed" and shows an edit summary from a Huggler, almost a sort of catch-22... EJF (huggle) (talk) 21:05, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Really? That's interesting. I still do RC patrol, and although obviously I use rollback I've never used Twinkle, Huggle etc. I only got rollback with +sysop of course - until then it was UNDO (and before then it was totally manual!). However I don't tend to get edit conflicts or rollback denials, but then I tend to edit from 07:00 UTC which is often a graveyard shift in WP world! Pedro :  Chat  21:22, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
It might just be my slow connection though, less than 1mbps (I live in countryside, and the nearest exchange isn't exactly hi-tech) I only did it manual on my first week or two doing vandal patrol, then I succumbed to the evil Twinkle. Ha, I'm only getting up when you start, the odd time I was editing around 04:00 UTC, virtually no patrolling - just a few bored Aussie kids! It really cranks up about 16:00 UTC when the Americans begin to arrive... EJF (huggle) (talk) 21:35, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh and congrats on the Godfathership (is that a word?) EJF (huggle) (talk) 21:37, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Burkina

Hi I hope you are still interested! I've done Template:Banwa today. We still need as many as possible!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:43, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

I know I have serious hayfever problems every June. I hate it too ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:58, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

If there ar eplaces in the same district you can but the coordinates in brackets in the title. Should be fine! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:37, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi I'd avoid using the VI thing though, Is there anyway you could fixed those links to cinlude the coordinates instead and then hide them in the nav box using pop ups? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:15, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes I;d leave them out until they can be sorted. It wouldn't be good to create 10 or so articles with V1 V2 etc. People will think it is an article on a new sports car!!! Just kidding you're doing great. What I would do is take the V1 type doubles out of the nav box and list them at Wikipedia:WikiProject Burkina Faso/Problematic place names and we can discuss it later. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:20, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Great work so far betwene us we must have created several hundred articles today. I'll see if I can get you white listed so your new articles are automatically patrolled like mine. I think you more than qualify. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Have a look here. It has detailed books on some of the countries most lacking on here, they look great books. Obviously I wouldn't buy them striught from the site but have a look on ebay where they are half price. There are some quite obscure countries with guides that you dodn't usually see. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:06, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

No it hasn't arrived yet, payment s still going through as I don't have any funds in my paypal account just yet, I used to be a quite a big seller on ebay and will resume once June is over!! I'm looking into the Benin one and have my eye on a £5 Laos lonely planet guide, the coverage of countries like Benin, Liberia and Guinea on wikipedia is absolutely diabolical. Sudan and Niger would be excellent choices as they are amongst the largest African countries and a lot could be written about them. I long for the day when specialist books become avilabale on provinces within such countries and we can make writing articles for these stubs a reality. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:17, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Indeed, good job. Between the three of us and the pace the bot will be going I think we can beat the bot on Burkina! [off to work on the Kongoussi Department! I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 10:34, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Why you said this article may be tagged by Coren search bot? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 10:43, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

It tagged one or two previous articles. Mainly because the infobox material is by and large the same; the only information that is different is population and coordinates. Seemingly mentioning CorenSearchBot in the edit summary seems to stop it tagging, Blofeld says there is a whitelist so that the bot ignores certain editors, I'm not sure if there are any specific requirements to join the list? Regards, EJF (talk) 10:46, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Seems to be true - I didn't mention CorenSearchBot in the edit summary for the article below and it got me. EJF (talk) 10:48, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
I am just wondering that you have recently created so many articles but Corenbot did not chase you. Check the history of my talk page, you will see the difference. How did you get rid of this bot? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 13:15, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Editorofthewiki seems to have added me to this: User:CorenSearchBot/allies. Perhaps you should add yourself, I don't think admin approval is needed. You can do that or mention "CorenSearchBot" in your edit summary; but I think it would be OK to add yourself to that list; you are making quite a lot of articles! Regards, EJF (talk) 13:19, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

See this also. It isn't anything to do with Coren it is a list by JV bot. I'll look into it now for you ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:44, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I've been drawing up a full list of official statistical sites by country at List of national and international statistical services. Then this can be copied to the new project. Sound good? What I also want is to create an extra column in the project space for the email addresses of these countries and sites so we can request a brochure of population statistics and other data that they have on a personal. I believe as the project is set up we need to email each of the countries to maximise our chances of obtaining the data ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:37, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Congratualtions on completing that region!! What we are doing is working through Wikipedia:WikiProject Burkina Faso/Provincial templates in alpha order and marking them as complete as we go. I've also requested that they sort out the new stub categories too ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:48, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I'll join you later and try to tag some of the articles in the talk pages. Keep up the good work! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:57, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

My RFB

Thank you for your comments in my RFB. Since it was only at 64%, it was a shoo-in to be unsuccessful, so I withdrew. I didn't want it to run until its scheduled close time because my intent in standing for RFB was to help the bureaucrats with their workload, not give them one more RfX to close. Through the course of my RFB, I received some very valuable feedback, some of it was contradictary, but other points were well agreed upon. I have ceased my admin coaching for now to give me time to revamp my method. I don't want to give up coaching completely, but I'm going to find a different angle from which to approach it. As for my RFA Standards, I am going to do some deep intraspection. I wrote those standards six months ago and I will slowly retool them. This will take some time for me to really dig down and express what I want in an admin candidate. If, after some serious time of deep thought, I don't find anything to change in them, I'll leave them the way they are. I'm not going to change them just because of some community disagreement as to what they should be. Will I stand for RFB again in the future? I don't know. Perhaps some time down the road, when my tenure as an administrator is greater than one year, if there is a pressing need for more active bureaucrats, maybe. If there no pressing need, then maybe not. Useight (talk) 03:02, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Burkina Faso

Hello! I have been doing New Pages Patrol and I saw your articles on Burkina Faso. I just wanted to take a moment to commend you on bringing this part of Africa to the Wikipedia pages. Thanks for the great work! --Ecoleetage (talk) 13:10, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words! A lot of the credit has to go to User:Blofeld of SPECTRE and User:Editorofthewiki also; we are working to create articles for all of the towns and villages in Burkina Faso to help in the effort to make this the most complete gazetteer in the world. Regards, EJF (talk) 13:13, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh, that is wonderful teamwork. My commendation goes to all three of you! I would volunteer to help you, but I am on holiday at the moment and my Net time is limited. I am home after Sunday and will have more time then, so feel free to call on me if you require additional help after that date. Cheers! --Ecoleetage (talk) 13:18, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, we are working at filling in templates at Wikipedia:WikiProject Burkina Faso/Provincial templates, and then adding the articles using the Burkina census (linked to in the articles) If you have any free time after your holiday it would be fantastic to have any help you can give! Cheers, EJF (talk) 13:30, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Fine, let us reconnect after I am back from holiday. Cheers! Ecoleetage (talk) 13:41, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I always believe that good work deserves commendation. Please accept this as a token of my respect for your hard work:

Burundi

Hi I've made a start drawing up the bones of the Mozambiquan templates see his talk page. I;ve also begun on Burundi and have fully completed Template:Bubanza Province. I managed to make a few commune maps in Burundi and started the communes in that province also. I have to draw up a template for the COmmunes of Burundi and get that started sometime. Right now I'm going to draw up some more project templates bones for rwanda and uganda so eventually we have templates like Burkina. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

I've begun expanding a few of the existing Mozambiqan towns like Cobue, Chicualacuala, Chinde etc. I have added infoboxes to all of them but first task is to google book search them and find anything in books that could be used to expand the stubs even if it is only a few referenced lines it makes a big difference ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:00, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

If you ever feel discouraged that the Burkina geo articles will remain perma stubs I selected a random new article Saponé. Have a look. Imagine what could be done when more info beocmes available on all these places. This along with the expansion of some of the Mozambique has given ne a renewed sense of hope that we can develop these stubs eventually ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:25, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Your're doing great. It makes a big difference if you search under google books rather than the normal search as it picks up text in books, which is what we want!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:51, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes strangely it is in the "south western region" but is actually located in south-eastern Burkina Faso. It spans southern burkina ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:26, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

See Dankoblé etc. It shows it is in south east Burkina Faso. It would look odd saying it is in the south west and then the map tells you is is definately south east ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:30, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Mmm. I see what you mean. Because the country is shaped like so if you indeed put a compass in the cntre it will be south-west. However if you venture down into southern Burkina which is that lower part, it would seme south east. Technically it is actually south-west you're right ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:39, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I've altered them to south-west well noted, you should be OK to start. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:46, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
