Choosing a most relevant short description is an improvement over listing too many. David notMD (talk) 19:32, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your input. My first job after Watford GS and Oxford was as a copy editor at Penguin Books. My second and only other permanent job, in a working life from 1966 to 2017, was a succession of editorial and journalistic positions at the BBC Monitoring Service, BBC External Services Current Affairs Talks, BBC Television Current Affairs and BBC Radio News. Otherwise, freelance editorial and translation contracts at the UN in New York, Geneva, Vienna and elsewhere. I am familiar with editing. There are few public sector schools with alumni who have had as many ministerial positions as Grant Shapps. Fairfieldroad (talk) 16:20, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your work history (and mine) are not relevant to how notable people are listed in school or population center articles. Standards are nothing or very brief. Interested readers can follow the Wikilink to learn more about the person. David notMD (talk) 19:18, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sentence 1: what are "population center articles" and how are they relevant to an alumni list?
Sentence 2: What on earth does it mean? What "standards"? What is "nothing or very brief"?
Sentence 3 is the only one that makes sense, and I accept it. You're right.
Is the editorial advice you are empowered by Wikipedia to share with its contributors expected to be clear? It certainly wouldn't have been published as it stands by any body I've worked for in a career you seem pleased with yourself for having dismissed. Apologies for not keeping an eye on your Talk page. Articles about universities and population centers, i.e., towns and cities, often have a section for notable graduates or residents. For both, the standard is only people for whom Wikipedia articles already exist. By 'standards', I meant that all that is standard is the person's name. A description of why they are notable or a reference is not needed. David notMD (talk) 00:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
