Thank you for contributing to this article. I was at the University of New Mexico NROTC unit from 1964 to 1969 including the totality of his tour. It was a difficult time to be in uniform on a college campus, and he handled the situation much better than his successor. I created this article because I concur with your evaluation. I was fortunate to talk with him on the telephone shortly before he passed away. He had recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer, which is what had killed my father (also a World War II naval officer -- handling amphibious landing operations in Sicily, Italy, and New Guinea). I resigned my commission at the end of my duty obligation in 1975 to protest President Ford's termination of registration procedures under the Military Selective Service Act and blanket presidential pardon of draft evaders; but my little brother subsequently became a Supply Corps officer and retired as CO of Naval Petroleum.
