Template categorization

[edit]

Hi and welcome. Just stopping by to let you know while it is appreciated that you have been adding categories to uncategorized pages, this edit of yours was done incorrectly and caused the category to be included in this weekly database report. Your edit has been reverted and here is the correct edit, categorizing the template.

Categorization of articles can be tricky enough. Catting templates is far trickier and far more tedious. Care must be taken to not damage the function of the template, because it can potentially affect so many other pages.

If there is a /doc (documentation) subpage, then that is the page where the categories must be placed, and they must be placed between <includeonly>...</includeonly> tags or they wont work. If there is no /doc page, then the template may be directly categorized, but this time the categories must be placed between <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags. This is to prevent the categories from getting transcluded along with the template. When this happens, it causes any and all articles using the template to become miscategorized. I.e. they are placed in the same category as the template itself. Much of this and other important things about template catting are spelled out at WP:CAT#T and WP:NOINCLUDE.

Thanks for your time. Cheers! --DB1729talk 17:26, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
