"OM" I want to share some knowledge I have gathered about the meaning of "OM". "OM" (it is the most popular short and universal divine word / mantra in Meditation and Yoga among Hindus), which basically consists of four parts - (1) Aa - represents the complete awakened state of consciousness of the human mind. (2) Oo - represents the Dream state of consciousness of the human mind. (3) Ma - represents the complete deep sleep state of the human mind (4) ڹ - A symbol - which represents the Cosmic consciousness.

About "Chinmudra"

I could not help recalling a mythological character , An enlightened young boy 'Dakshinamurthi' and the four old sages 'Sanatkumaras'. The foursome Sages approached Dakshinamurthi and pleaded with him to teach them ways of removing ignorance and thus attain salvation. Here I reproduce a Sanskrit verse, as I know it:

"Chittam vadatharo moolay vruddha shishya guru yuvah gurosthu mouna vyakhyanum shishyathu chinna samshayah"

Dakshinamurthi taught them Brahma Jnana (Cosmic Knowledge) through silence and Chinmudra, which represents wisdom of the highest order, involving bringing the middle of the thumb and the tip of the index finger to form a circle and fanning out the other three fingers. The thumb represents the Cosmic Consciousness and the index finger represents the individual consciousness and the circle completes the interrelationship between the two. And the other three straight fingers representing the awakened, dream and deep sleep state of the mind.

The meditation part: Sit comfortably with eyes closed and with both hands in 'Chinmudra' posture, resting on the thighs, lightly. Now chant "OM" quietly in the mind (There should be no physical movement of the mouth or the tongue or any sound, humming etc.,) for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you forget the mantra and start wandering in other thoughts, it does not matter. As soon as you realise it, just come back to the mantra and continue. This results in relaxation of the body and Peace of mind.

Try it out for 21 days and more you will see a great recognisable change in you.

(Note: You may use any short two syllable word (Beejamanthra) of your choice. For eg: Lum, Vum, Rum, Yum, Hum etc; in place of OM, but you should not change the mantra, once you have chosen it).
