afqans are not persians[edit]

From ... Talk:Persian people.

Hi Iranmehr2015. You are not the first person to appear upset about needing to claim that Afgans are not Persian. It is almost funny, but not. While yes, in Iran, and to Iranians, Persian is synonymous of Iranian, in English, Persian is an ethnicity, and Iranian is a someone from the political nation of Iran. Yes, the two are very similar, but I wonder if there is an English subtlety you miss?

You seem to be close to calling Persian as defined by a racial purity? If you do, I invite you to investigate genetic analyses of racial purity.

It is correct to say that Afgans are not Persian. However, I understand that there is at least one minority ethic group in Afghanistan that has some Persian ethnic heritage. If true, it follows, that there is the complication that there are some Afghans, who are not Iranian by birth or recent ancestry, who are at least part Persian. I think these ethnic groups are not even all Tajiks, but I note a similar position that "Tajiks are not Persian".

However, I have never come across such vehemence that "Tajiks are not Persian", or "Arabs are not Persian", as with "Afghans are not Persian". It is because the first two, especially the second, are so obviously true, but the third is not quite completely true? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:49, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
