French Republican Calendar

[edit]

October. Given that the FRC begins during the Autumnal equinox, is it appropriate to match FRC dates to Gregorian dates? These dates won't line up at all during leap years (etc). That's the problem with trying to map one calendar over onto another. That's also why movable holidays/observances aren't recorded in date articles. I know you've put a lot of work into posting this information, but for the sake of accuracy, please reconsider including this information in date articles. Rklawton 16:05, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks very much for writing. I considered that problem, and it certainly is a valid one, but it didn't quite outweigh the possible benefit of the dates being right most of the time. The date articles include number of days left in the year, which change during leap years (something which is noted in most, but not all, date articles), and I debated including a specific note with every edit indicating that the leap year changes the FRC, but that seemed a bit awkward. I'm going to suspend making further changes right now so that the issue can be discussed, but unless there are strong objections, I think I will proceed. Thanks again for responding.
I have just two concerns. You have responded to the first concern. If the only difference between calendars occurs on leap year, then adding a note (ex: July X on leap years) addresses this sufficiently.
My second concern is notability. Consider the List of calendars that have been used during the course of history. Most of them were used longer and by more people than the FRC, yet the FRC is the only one included in date articles. This seems disproportionate. Rklawton 16:46, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm glad that we have agreement on the first point, and I certainly see what you are saying about notability. Truly, the FRC is completely irrelevent. But it is beautiful, and I think people might enjoy knowing more about it. There are many holidays listed in the date articles (Discordian holidays, etc.) that aren't very relevent either, but people seem to enjoy them. As for disproportionate representation, I wholeheartedly agree, but I feel that the date articles might be enriched considerably by the inclusion of days from other calendars as well, not just the FRC. The FRC is just the one I picked to work on. Thanks for your help figuring this out, and for your comments. Jahiliyyah 17:24, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Would you also consider adding other calendars once you finish the FRC? Lunar calendards probably wouldn't work but others might. Rklawton 17:43, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Absolutely. I always need a new project. Do you have any suggestions for what I ought to tackle next? Also, may I take this as tacit approval to continue my work with FRC? I'm happy to wait, however, if the topic bears further discussion. Jahiliyyah 19:05, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As you know, you don't need anyone's approval, you just need to avoid disapproval. I'm all in favor of information sharing and cross-cultural communications. I haven't given much thought about what other calendars we might include. I suppose we should sort them by popular usage and then evaluate the list for feasibility (the Islamic calendar just won't work in a date article).
I suggest the following:
    • Create a section called "Other calendars" (or something like it) in each date article below the Holidays section and move your current FRC entries there.
    • Visit the date articles project page and add your proposal there for discussion. I'll support the activities we've discussed.
    • Draft a standard statement to include regarding why certain calendars won't appear (lunar). We'll need this on the project page, and we may include this within the in-line notes for each article as a reminder to future editors. Rklawton 19:49, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Excellent advice. I wasn't totally comfortable putting the FRC dates under "Holidays & Observances" and this leaves it open for future calendars to be added. Thanks very much for your help, I'll get started after dinner! Jahiliyyah 20:27, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I cleaned up this article (see the article's talk page). I think we can de-prod it now. See what you think. Katr67 22:50, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks much better. De-prod'ed. Jahiliyyah 01:32, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
