Welcome![edit]

Hello, Jaynarocha, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. Hi. Before you create a draft, you need to decide the topic you want to work on. Are you expanding an existing article, or creating one about a topic that doesn't exist yet on Wikipedia? You should take a look at the Editing Wikipedia brochure - there's a lot of advice in there to get you started. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:03, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Matigari[edit]

Hello Jaynarocha,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Matigari for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Book draft[edit]

Hi Jaynarocha, Emmaclements22, Paula.clark, Suzannebullock. I'm tagging you all in this so you can see this. I was notified that an article you had created was nominated for speedy deletion because it copied an existing article, that of the author Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. The reason for this is that the article was actually on the article's talk page and what they saw was a short bio of the author.

Looking at the talk page, the article did not appear to be ready for the mainspace. There were multiple reasons for this:

  1. The article did not have any sourcing that would be considered independent and reliable - the article used two primary sources, meaning that they were things created by the author or people/organizations/etc affiliated with him. There was one independent source, however this was a link to a self-published blog that was created as part of a school assignment. The issue with this is that the site did not undergo the type of editorial oversight that Wikipedia requires of a source and as such, the content in it would be considered entirely original research on behalf of the students - especially as part of their assignment would have likely been for them to make their own interpretations of the source material. To show notability the article would have to have at least two independent, reliable sources that asserted something very major (like the book winning a major national award) or 4-5 sources that would each be considered a sign of notability. Journal reviews are a good way to establish this.
  2. Unfortunately while the analysis of the themes and other material looks to be good, it would still be considered a personal analysis of the source material. On Wikipedia we can only include research and conclusions that have been explicitly stated by others in reliable sources. It's more than a little frustrating sometimes, to be honest - especially if we have something that would seem obvious. One of the good notes about this is that if we have something like an essay by the author that explicitly says a claim or theme.
  3. The writing is OK, but seems a little choppy at times. This isn't something that would get the article deleted, but it would need to be fixed at some point.
  4. I noticed that the book cover was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as your own work. Please be careful and do not do this in the future - book covers are considered to be copyrighted to the publisher and/or author, so they cannot be uploaded to the Commons at all. We can still upload book covers, however they have to be done in a very specific fashion. I'll definitely help with this.

Now all of that aside, I'm very pleased that you picked this book. I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not familiar with it or it's author, but Africa-related topics tend to be woefully under-covered on Wikipedia - especially literature. I have no doubt that reliable sources for this does exist, so this just needs some editing before we can move this back to the mainspace. I'll help with this, since book related articles tend to be my specialty. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:47, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've done a little tweaking to the draft, which you can find at User:Jaynarocha/Matigari. I also added a few sources, which you should be able to access via Google but hopefully your library will have the books themselves. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:38, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
