Semi-Arianism
[edit]Your understanding of the meaning of the word hypostasis (following Calvin) is correct but anachronistic in the context of a discussion of early 4th century theology. At that time the words ousia and hypostasis were basically synonymous. This explains a lot of the confusion following the Council of Nicaea (which anathematized those who spoke of God as having more than a single hypostasis!), especially between Latins and Greeks, since the Latin word substantia and the Greek hypostasis are etymologically identical (both literally mean "standing under"). Arius himself seems to have spoken of the Son as both a seperate ousia and a seperate hypostasis. A more "modern" understanding, based on the theology of Constantinople (381) speaks of God as one ousia three hypostases, or in Latin one substantia three personae...and this is probably what Calvin has in mind when, as you say, he says that hypostasis ought to be identified with person (which is perfectly correct)...but this developed vocabulary came later, as Ive said.Ocyril (talk) 04:47, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Ocyril, I had no idea that Nicea and Constantinople varied (linguistically at least) in such a major way, thank you for that. I had had an inkling following the trinities podcast that this was the case, but as I say, no-one has highlighted this anathema before in my memory. If you have any further references to guide on me on this 55-year transition then I would be most grateful.
Much obliged, JohnJbjbjbjbjb (talk) 16:41, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
User page
[edit]Hello JB, I left a welcome message at the top of your page with more information on Wikipedia. One note: I noticed your user page. Everyone has their work, research and hobbies outside of Wikipedia, but it's also important to understand that on Wikipedia authors should not promote their own writings as sources, only secondary+tertiary secondary ones (WP:COI, WP:PRIMARY, WP:RS). I'm not saying that you're doing it, it's just so you know from the start. Thanks and happy editing, —PaleoNeonate – 09:00, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
