Re-Style is the stage name of the hardcore music producer Mathijs Maas (Middelburg NL, 13th March 1986).

Biography

[edit]

Mathijs Maas a.k.a. Re-Style was born on the 13th of March, 1986, in Middelburg, The Netherlands. Being only nine years old in 1995, he quickly became a big fan of hardcore music and the scene. Mathijs started buying CD singles and 12” records, which were the most popular form of media at the time. After some time spent listening to and collecting music, he decided to take his shot at becoming an artist himself.

Mathijs started to mix earlier forms of hardcore (nowadays known as old school and early hardcore) with cassette deck and a Panasonic turntable to create his first mixtapes. At the age of 12, he made the choice to produce his own music. He made his first tracks with the MS DOS-program Fast Tracker. After developing his skills and producing music for two years, he was ready to build a proper studio. Mathijs bought his first hardware synthesizer, the Roland Alpha Juno-2, and his very first set of direct drive turntables. The investment in his new studio gave the tools to start producing music on a professional level. Mathijs sent his demos to the infamous Masters of Hardcore record label. This step would become crucial in his career.

Together with Bass-D and Outblast, he learned to improve his mixing and mastering skills. Re-Style debuted on Masters of Hardcore in 2002 with the “Land Of Hardcore” 12”, including the tracks “Land of Hardcore” (a collaboration with Bass-D & King Matthew) and the solo tracks “Snertjong” and “Give Ya House.” After doing a 12” with Endonyx on the now inactive Overload Records, his legacy on Masters of Hardcore continued. Tracks like “Right Here, Right Now,” “Relytser,” “Busted Choir,” and “Break It Down” brought Mathijs to the forefront of the hardcore scene. These tracks led to the opportunity to create the Masters of Hardcore anthem “The Outbreak Of The Hardcore Psychopaths,” for the first Masters of Hardcore event in the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund, Germany. Following his quick rise in the scene, Mathijs quickly got booked for most of the most significant events in hardcore: Thunderdome, Nature One, Dominator, Syndicate, Hardcore United, Hardcore4life, Megarave, Hardcore Gladiators and many other parties. This period saw the release of the “M*therf*ckin Bullit” E.P. on Masters of Hardcore Records, and Mathijs’ music getting featured heavily on compilations.

In 2009, Mathijs had another set of successful 12-inch releases: “Asskicked” and “Planetgroover,” which featured “Asskicked,” “Come True,” “Vision,” “Planetgroover,” the Negative A remix of “Sacrifice,” as well as one of his most well-known tracks, “Get It Crackin.” Mathijs was asked to do several remixes for artists like Angerfist, AniMe, Predator & Dr. Z-Vago. Re-Style had the honour to deliver the Syndicate 2010 anthem. The following years saw Mathijs release multiple tracks on Masters of Hardcore, as well as other labels such as Foolish Records. During this period, he worked with artists such as Scott Brown, The Viper, Korsakoff, and Bodyshock. He was also responsible for various festival anthems, such as Harmony of Hardcore, Free Festival, Bassleader, and Masters of Hardcore’s Russian and Austrian editions. 2018 saw Mathijs make a stylistic shift to faster and more euphoric music influenced by frenchcore. His 2009 track Get It Crackin’ was remixed by Sefa and found mainstream appeal in both hardstyle and hardcore scenes. After some self-released bootlegs of “Forever Young” and “Spring,” Mathijs teamed up with one of happy hardcore’s oldest artists, Charly Lownoise, in 2019 to release “City Streets.” That same year, he released “Wildfire” on Masters of Hardcore, which was in a similar style. February 2020 saw the release of “One Last Dance,” which grew on YouTube faster than any previous Re-Style release. That same month, another collaboration with Charly Lownoise was released, this collaboration being Charly Lownoise's final release. In March 2020, as a response to the Coronavirus pandemic and cancellation of the 25th edition of Masters of Hardcore, Re-Style performed on the official Hardcore Therapy podcast.
