User talk:Josephine nye
I have a unhappy task of informing you that I’ve reverted (removed) most of your good faith and probably true recent edits at Robert William Roper House and Millford Plantation. There is nothing in the sources to indicate that Roper was a slave holder much less a slave trader. Those claims need to be referenced. Also a statement in a source regarding the use of slave labor such as “and by providing the vast majority of the labor needed for production of building materials and construction” should not be used to support the fact that a particular house was build by slave labor. Generalizations are okay but they can not be used to document a specific example unless that building is named. Vast majority” is not the same as “all.” Oh yes, please do not let this exchange chase you away from wikipedia. Rather find some verification for your statemnts are get them back in. The ugliness of the slave situation in the South (and anywhere else) needs to be addressed, just with the appropriate references. Also, if you put something, anything, on your user page then your user name will change into a blue link rather than being the red one that it is now. The blue link, as opposed to the red link, suggests to others, or at least to me, that you are not the dead end that red links on wikipedia indicates and that perhaps you are even a serious editor who intends to stay around. The "talk" tab at the top left of this page will change color too after my posting, because now there is something there. Please consider it, Einar aka

I hope that this (clicking edit) is the proper way to respond to a talk page. Thank you for your thoughtful note. I searched the web for references to the contribution of enslaved Africans and their descendants at both houses and the erasure/exclusion of that history is remarkably thorough. I did find that in the wikipedia article on John Manning, the first owner of the Millford Plantation, a documented and cited refernce to him as the 6th largest American slave owner of the the time who owned 670 enslaved Africans. Would it be appropriate to add that to the brief biographical information about him in the Millford Plantation article? It seems at least as important to the context for the house as the fact that he would later become a governor. Josephine nye (talk) 18:10, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
- A few process things first. When replying on a user talkpage, or in any discussion on an article talkpage one typically starts with a : and the reply to that with a :: etc. This formats the answers in an indented, more easy to read manner. Also, if you want to get a particular editor's attention you can do it with a @Josephine nye:. You'll need to look in the Edit the page section to see what I have done. Yes, adding biographical stuff to these articles is a good idea, however don't just cut & paste too much from other wikipedia articles. Also you can't use wikipedia as a source, but you can and should use references from other articles. When possible, or perhaps "all the time" you should check out the reference before using it yourself because a lot of weird stuff goes on here. I got involved with your edits because I was pretty sure that they were good faith edits and i liked the content you were adding, it just needs to be done right. I have been her for a while, sometimes it seems like too long, but feel free to ask me anything about editing, or anything else. I have opinions on politics, religion and race relationships too. Actually, you'd better not ask. Carptrash (talk) 19:05, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

- Thank you. I took another stab at it, and actually, I probably would not have tried again except that I was surprised to receive such a considerate and somewhat encouraging reply, even as my edits were reverted. We'll see how this one is received!Josephine nye (talk) 19:30, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
- Well good. We (wikipedia) need new editors and I have a tendency sometimes to NOT assume good faith when dealing with rookies. Carptrash (talk) 14:31, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
