Actually, it's not the first time I've used Wikipedia but I do so so infrequently that it does appear I'm a newbie. My main activity is a musical one, and I contribute regularly for www.imslp.org
I have a query : I have been working at a site I added on a little known artist called Constant Detré. I am one of the latter's daughter's best friends, and she asked me to do the English version, which I did. Recently when I looked at it again, to my surprise it had been added to by various contributors, in a most constructive way. I pointed this out to Constant Detré's daughter who asked me to do the same thing for the corresponding French article devoted to this artist, which I have done.

Now my question is this : I find it impossible to pin the same pictures that are on the English page on to the French one. Why is this ? The French site directs me to upload to Wikimedia first, but intimates that if the art is copyrighted or not authorized (?? by whom ?) it can't be done. Yet, it was done for the English page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant_Detr%C3%A9).
Incidentally the pictures I would like to use are on my site page : https://sites.google.com/site/julianbesset/mesconnus3 Can they be transferred from there in some direct way to the page : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant_Detr%C3%A9 ? Needless to say, I have full permission from the artist's daughter. On the wiki site www.imslp.org uploading art is a much easier procedure, so I'm puzzled it can't be done likewise and directly on Wikipedia. Jurabe (talk) 17:23, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Jurabe,
Thanks for your work on this article--it looks pretty darn good! When I read your message, I saw three things that I think you should check out. First, (and sorry if this seems offensive, but I just have to ask) is the French version of this page a machine-translated one of the original, or did you write it out in French yourself? Wikipedias in different languages are completely separate encyclopedias, not mere translations of the English one, so an article on the same topic that you wrote in French is great (or a translation that you wrote of the English one), but using Google Translate or its ilk is frowned upon. Second, I am not accusing you of ANY impropriety whatsoever, but the fact that you have a personal connection (however tenuous) with the subject of the article could put you at risk for dealing with a a potential conflict of interest (COI). A good place to check yourself would be the resource here (and sorry if this seems infantilising--a lot will not be relevant to this situation, but it's a good essay)--so far you have done exactly what you should: putting your potential COI in the open. The third thing (which relates directly to your question) is the issue of the images and their copyright. The policies for copyright and fair-use images are different between different language editions of WP (which are separate entities with different content); I suggest that you take a look at this to ensure that the images on the English language WP can stay here and this [[1]] for your problem at Commons. I'm not going to close your help request (others Wikipedians will come and help) because I am not quite sure what the final answer to your question is, but I hope this helps get you oriented. Again, thanks and welcome (or welcome back!)
Feel free to write a message on my talk page if you want to respond to me!
    Sincerely,

File:Constant Detré (Szilárd Eduard Diettmann), photograph.jpg is set as non-free, and is allowed as it passes the WP:NFCC - the main one here (for people) is that the subject is deceased and therefore not replaceable. As a non-free image it has been uploaded to en-wiki, commons does not accept non free images.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:22, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've no idea about non-free images on fr-wiki - you will have to ask there. fr:Wikipédia:Legifer should be the fr version of WP:MCQ.
If you want to get the image onto commons then (ideally) it needs to be...
  1. Uploaded to commons by the copyright holder OR
  2. Follow the process at commons:commons:consent OR
  3. Add the code from http://creativecommons.org/choose/results-one?license_code=by-sa&jurisdiction=&version=3.0&lang=en to the web site, then upload at commons, quoting the web page as the source, and using a {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} license. That's assuming the copyright holder agrees to having a free image.
Hope that helps, Ron (admin here and commons)  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:31, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
