Potential conflict of interest

[edit]

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors;
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
    and you must always:
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Business' FAQ. For more details about what constitutes a conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. Thank you. —BMRR (talk) 17:08, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Removal of {{fact}} tag in Wells, Maine article

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from Wells, Maine. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. —BMRR (talk) 18:54, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Style changes

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, you may not know that Wikipedia has a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Using different styles throughout the encyclopedia, as you did in Wells, Maine, makes it harder to read. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. —BMRR (talk) 18:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your input as I learn about what to do here. Could you please elaborate on this. I don't know to what you're referring and I certainly don't want to be offensive. I think you may be referring to adding "at Wells Transporation Center" to Amtrak line. I purposefully used "Vermont Transit" instead of Greyhound because the Wells Town site still refers to Verrmot Transit, and the buses, in fact, are marked Vermont Transit. Linking to VermontTransit.com, however, just pulls up a page referring the visitor to Greyhound.com (wasn't sure how permanent a site this might be. I really want to upload my image of the Town flag which has my rendering of the Amtrak, Town Hall and more. Thanks, Kristi(Kb04090 (talk) 20:11, 2 June 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Good evening,
The style changes I was referring to were in the History section where you described the text on the town flag, and also the line you added to the Sites of Interest section regarding the various beaches. Specifically, you used ellipses in places where a colon or semicolon should have been used, and there were also some issues with capitalization and quotation marks, which I fixed accordingly. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to punctuation, so please don't be offended! Mainly I wanted to make you aware of Wikipedia's Manual of Style, which has a lot of very helpful info. I realize that it's very lengthy and kind of intimidating, so don't feel like you have to read it all at once. I keep it in my Bookmarks/Favorites and refer to it every now and then.
Regarding the Greyhound/Vermont Transit link, I removed the external link to Greyhound's web site and replaced it with an internal link to the Wikipedia article about Greyhound. When a Wikipedia article exists for a subject, it is preferable to link to that article rather than an external site, whenever possible. Links to external sites are, of course, perfectly appropriate when you need to cite a source or provide a reference.
Speaking of references, if you can find any news articles that discuss the Wells 350th celebration, those would make great references for the Wells Wikipedia article. The York County Coast Star may still have some articles on their web site.
To upload images: there should be a section on the left site of your Wikipedia screen labeled "toolbox." In that section, towards the bottom, there should be a link that says "Upload file." From there, you can upload images. Bear in mind that there are quite a few restrictions on what types of images can be uploaded, specifically in regards to copyright. The Upload page can help guide you through that process.
Thanks for taking the time to read all this (sorry it was so long), and once again, welcome to Wikipedia!

Thank you for the explanation. I actually wrote most of the promo for the Wells 350th Celebration and have turned my files over to the Town Hall. I can find articles ... Other than my own page, how can I add one such article on its own page to Wikipedia? I have been unable to decipher that in the HELP files. I would think that placing the content on Wikipedia would be preferable to linking to the Coast Star which could drop the content at any time.

Good afternoon,
I would suggest trying the New contributors' help page, where you can find information and ask questions. I've been on Wikipedia for a little over a year but there is still a lot that I've yet to figure out. Fortunately there are other users far more experienced than me who are very helpful.
