[edit]Any objections to me reviewing this, or would you prefer to have somebody else review it, since I've reviewed your last several GANs? Hog Farm Talk 18:06, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Hog Farm: I would actually welcome you reviewing it since you are one of the few reviewers familiar enough with the American Civil War to be able to offer more detailed comments. Kges1901 (talk) 18:08, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Your recent page move
[edit]I'm certainly not going to move war about this, especially since you're doing such outstanding work on regimental articles (bravo, dude!). 6th Regiment, European Brigade is way too vague, and I find it unlikely that's the only moniker we may utilize. BTW, is there another 6th Louisiana we're not covering, because that's an important thing for us to know? BusterD (talk) 16:27, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- That's what the unit is called in secondary sources, but however there is relatively little coverage of these units because they did not see significant combat action since the Union occupation of New Orleans itself ended up being relatively bloodless. I think the best course of action is to cover the unit and the other New Orleans militia under an article like European Brigade (New Orleans militia) or a broader New Orleans Confederate militia article. The problem with your move was that the 6th Louisiana Infantry Regiment was one of the units in the famous Louisiana Tigers brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia, and that unit has much more secondary coverage. I have not found a secondary source that refers to the 6th Regiment, European Brigade as the '6th Louisiana'. Kges1901 (talk) 16:34, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- That's fascinating but not totally unexpected. I spent a good deal of time bringing all these regiments into a regular naming form and have seen surprisingly little dispute since my labor (outside the original backlash, such as it was). I figured there'd be exceptions we'd stumble into eventually. Since you're readily aware of sources, would you mind creating a brigade stub containing a list of units so we have some structure upon which to form the regiments we'll need to name at some point? BusterD (talk) 16:50, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) - Buster, I can anecdotally confirm that the situation is confusing, I was working on Battle of Front Royal just yesterday, was trying to find a link for the Louisiana Tigers 6th La., and was confused to find that the obscure New Orleans unit was where 6th Louisiana Infantry Regiment (Confederate) was going. I can hammer out a C-class article for the Tigers unit this afternoon if there's no objects to that. Hog Farm Talk 16:54, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks to you both. That's a pretty essential ommision, so we appreciate your rescuing it. BusterD (talk) 16:57, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

That would be great, and I might be able to expand an article on the 6th Louisiana later with details from Terry Jones' book on the Tigers. As for the European Brigade, it was a military unit in name only. Not only did they lack men to really be considered a brigade, the European Brigade was also poorly armed as a month before the city fell, only 180 out of 5,310 men had weapons[1]. They are more notable as an example of the response of immigrants in the South to the Civil War rather than anything they did militarily. Kges1901 (talk) 17:02, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- That would explain why I was having trouble finding the European brigade in Bergeron's book about the Louisiana CSA units. Hog Farm Talk 17:16, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yup, they weren't really a Confederate unit or even like the other state militiamen because the men of the brigade were not Confederate citizens. The sources I can find describe their service as attempting often unsuccessfully to prevent rioting in the city between the Confederate withdrawal and the Union occupation. Kges1901 (talk) 17:25, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- Kges, @BusterD: - it exists now. Mainly based on Bergeron, and fleshed out with some other stuff I have. I don't have anything great that deals with Early's 1864 activities in the Valley, so that part's really thin because Bergeron doesn't give much detail. I've got to go clean before the parents come to visit, so I don't have time to link to it from anywhere besides Front Royal. It's probably only a C-class, and any improvements would be welcome, because this is up there with USCGC Barberry on the list of "things HF half-assed to quickly get an article on this subject". I don't have time right now to pull it onto Commons, but I'm aware of a pretty good image to use in this article. It turns out this is the regiment for that really haunting Antietam photo of the dead horse that looked asleep. Hog Farm Talk 19:35, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- I've got the image uploaded and added to the article, but I'm still working on getting all of the inbound links set up. Hog Farm Talk 01:37, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
