Nnedi Okorafor

[edit]

Hi! I wanted to give you a quick note about the article addition. Good job on recognizing something that Okorafor feels strongly about, especially as it wasn't already in the article. I do have some notes:

  1. Be careful with quotes - these should be used sparingly and generally only in places where the quote is especially noteworthy and cannot be otherwise summarized.
  2. Also be careful with dates. The paragraph that prefaces the quote reads "Ever since winning The World Fantasy Award in 2011 people such as Daniel José Older..." and gives off the impression that the petition really started in 2011, which contradicts the source, which states that the petition was started in 2014. Okorafor did write an essay that same year, so you may want to instead lead with that. You could write it something like "Shortly after winning The World Fantasy Award in 2011, Okorafor published an essay "Lovecraft’s racism & The World Fantasy Award statuette, with comments from China Miéville", in which she reflects upon her conflicting emotions on winning an award in the shape of a large silver bust of H.P. Lovecraft. Okorafor would later voice her support for Daniel José Older's 2014 petition to replace the Lovecraft bust with one of Octavia Butler." This gets the same point across and is more specific with the dates. (You can use or reword this if you wish.)
  3. Be careful about going into too much detail on the process of the WFA statuette getting replaced. She did voice her support on the petition, but ultimately that's all the detail that really needs to be in the article since that starts to put some undue weight on the statue controversy, which is already covered in the main article on the award.

All of that aside, I really do like that you've added mention of this to the article since it's clearly important to Okorafor. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:36, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
