Please help with image upload.

[edit]

{{adminhelp}} I am confused about what to do to upload an image to my page. I want to use the cover of an album that is freely used everywhere on the web. In addition, the band members have given me permission to do this. What do I need to do? Thank you very much. --MTStern (talk) 11:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

will be with you shortly Trafford09 (talk) 11:46, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ok, 2 things. 1. As you rightly say, copyright is an issue, but we could come to that later.
2. there's code you put on a page, to include a file such as a picture.
More shortly. Trafford09 (talk) 11:54, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Helpme

[edit]

Hiya, first may I advise you that it's best to use the 'helpme' template rather than the 'adminhelp' one. There aren't so many admins around, and your question doesn't need an admin, just a fellow mere-mortal like me. So next I'll try to answer your question. Loading an image into text

[edit]

OK - let me answer the question first re adding the picture, put [[File:Barnaby_B._Barratt,_PhD,_DHS.jpg|thumb|{{deletable image-caption}}]] on a line on its own, in the document. Of course, you need to change that name to the picture of yours. For more in this (more options etc.), see WP:IMAGES.

For more help, you can either;

  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live.

Images as you guessed can't infringe copyright. The easiest way round this is to see if there's already an image on WP:commons that you could use, in which case there's no issue at all. Then, loading the image onto your page, from Commons, is easy.

The copyright issue is explained in WP:copyright. See also Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright. I know that's a lot of reading, but do get back to me [as shown above] if it's not clear. Trafford09 (talk) 12:39, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If the image you want to include is not on Commons, then we have potential issues. You say you have the band's permission, but of course we have no way of verifying that. I don't doubt you, but legally Wikipedia needs to be certain. I'd have to get back to you if that were the case. It may be easiest to try including the image, and very shortly I'd expect it then to be challeneged or removed. But at least at that time you would have full standard instructions on how to proceed. Hope this helps, Trafford09 (talk) 12:50, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use.

[edit]

OK, so you're happy that the image you want to upload meets fair use criteria. I'll leave that assumption to you. Now, it seems that for such images, we can't load them to Commons, but we can load up without using Commons. Wikipedia:Uploading images is a short read, and has a paragraph specifically on WP:Uploading_images#Fair_use_images.

That leads us to the page WP:Special:Upload, where you can do the uploading.

In the Summary: box, be sure to put every reason you can think of, to convince people that you have the band's permission, & the other points you've made. This is to hopefully avoid being challenged once you've loaded it. Have fun, Trafford09 (talk) 15:02, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, just one other thing, if I'm not responding quickly (I'll be busy later on), feel free to either use my mentor User_talk:chzz. He's far, far more knowledgeable about images than I am, and loaded umpteen himself. He's also usu. on the talk to us live thing, which really works; there's several people, including myself, sitting there all the time, more than happy to help users with any Wikipedia questions. Pop in and say "hi" some time. Cheers, Trafford09 (talk) 15:07, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chzz

[edit]

Hi there.

Hopefully the tips that Trafford09 gave above will help; it's probably easier than it sounds to upload such a thing. A picture of an album cover qualifies as 'Fair use of a copyrighted material'. Even though you might have permission, it remains copyright. So - click 'upload' on the left, and follow the prompts - "The cover of an album or single", "an infobox about the album/single" (that's the box at the top of the article). Choose the source file (from your own computer) and the destination filename.

Then you'll see the 'summary' box;

{{album cover fur
<!-- REQUIRED -->
|Article=
|Use=Infobox
<!-- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -->
|Source=
<!-- ADDITIONAL INFORMATION -->
...etc

In the 'Article=' part, put [[Koinonia (band)]]. The use is filled in for you, In 'Source=' explain where you got the image from. If from the internet, put the URL. In the 'licence' dropdown, choose 'Album cover'. Upload the file.

To insert the picture into the article Koinonia (band), you'd edit it, and right at the top, you should see this bit;

{{Infobox Musical artist <!-- See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Musicians -->
| Name                = Koinonia
| Img                 = Replace this image.svg
| Img_capt            =

Simply change "Replace this image.svg" with the name of the file you uploaded. If you want, you could add a caption to the "Img_capt =" part.

If you have any trouble, please ask for more help; either

  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.

Hello, MTStern. You have new messages at Chzz's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Bill Maxwell

[edit]

Thanks for the work you did on the Koinonia page. I wonder if you could supply a URL for the references to Bill Maxwell on Facebook? Otherwise, it's not verifiable. Thanks!

[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that Koinonia Frontline Cover.jpg has been nominated for speedy deletion. You mentioned that the band gave you permission to use the image. In what form was that permission? If that constitutes placing the image under a creative commons license, perhaps you could revise the copyright statement?
