Re: Chronology of Second Mafia war[edit]

Hi, I agree it is not the most clear part of both the Mafia article as well as the Second Mafia War article. Moreover, it is not referenced. I contemplated rewriting it several times, but have not found the time yet. It is a complicated case. Most observers agree that the start of the war was the killing of Lieutenant-Colonel Giuseppe Russo of the Carabinieri on August 20, 1977. Russo, who according to the Corleonesi was a confident of Giuseppe Di Cristina, was killed without the consent of the Commission, which had opposed a prior request by Totò Riina and Bernardo Provenzano. Di Cristina understood the strategy of the Corleonesi. While the more established Mafia families in Palermo refrained from openly killing authorities because that would attract to much police attention, the Corleonesi deliberately killed to intimidated the authorities in such a way that the suspicion would fell on their rivals in the Commission. The end, I would say, is somewhere at the end of the 1980s, when Riina has his former allies Giuseppe Greco and Vincenzo Puccio killed when they threatened to oppose him. The arrest of Bagarella is connected to yet another conflict in the Mafia: the widening differences between Riina and Provenzano about the terrorist strategy to confront the Italian state after the confirmation of the sentence of the Maxi Trial in 1992-93. A chronology could help but certainly does not explain everything. - DonCalo (talk) 12:36, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would not make it too complicated. The parallel war against representatives of the state should only be mentioned if relevant, as well as the financial aspects. Furthermore, Di Cristina was not a puppet of Bontade, he was his "own man" and certainly not the lesser man than Bontade !!!
