You didnt have to be a Boston resident to know just how rampant the corruption was in Massachusetts in the 1970s. The Bay State made national headlines for all the wrong reasons when Walpole State Prison saw riots, many murders, and even a hostage situation. What commonwealth residents, mafia aficionados and even government officials may not know, however, is just how deep the corruption went. An explosive new crime book promises to change that. A Big House for Little Men, the debut literary effort from Boston native Michael W. McKay, is a plot-twisting thriller that, among other things, uses the secret partnership between notorious Boston mafia figure James Whitey Bulger and then-District Attorney Bill Delahunt as the backdrop for a story detailing how another Boston street thug named Mikey Thurber literally got away with murder with the help from Delahunt.
Anyone who was alive in that time period, anyone who has lived in Massachusetts, or anyone who knows Boston knows about Walpole State Prison and what went on there, says McKay. But what they dont know is who was behind it all. Theyd be surprised by just how high up this corruption went.
McKay goes on to outline the corrupt dealings not only by the head of the Boston F.B.I. office, but all the way up to the District Attorney of Norfolk County in Massachusetts, William Delahunt, and the Massachusetts State Police. The Cody character within McKays novel is the notorious Mikey Thurber in real life and McKay says the crimes he commits are atrocious. Thurber was the most talked about and feared creature in Boston in the 1980s. One of the most heinous and brutal (alleged) murders he commits while in prison involves an ice pick and a castration, says McKay. And William Delahunt and his state police unit set him out as a free man. Thats when Whitey Bulger turned up missing!
While Delahunt went on to be elected to the House of Representatives in 1996 (and announced in March he would step down; just when this book got released), Bulgers story took a different turn. The longtime leader of the Winter Hill Gang, an Irish-American crime family based in Boston, faces 19 counts of murder (among other charges) and the F.B.I. lists him as the #2 criminal on its most wanted list. Despite a $2 million reward offer for Bulgers capture, no one has been able to find him, which has led many to believe Bulger has been dead for several years.
If thats the case, and I think it is, its because of a falling out between Mikey Thurber and Bulger, says McKay, who is currently working on another new title called You Leave Me No Option. Its no coincidence Bulger disappeared once the real-world inspiration for the main character in my book, Mikey Thurber, who Delahunt released from prison, and is still a free man. In fact, when McKay asked Thurber if he knew anything about Whiteys disappearance, Thurber just smiled and said, Im sure Whitey and his crackhead girlfriend are still together and will never bother anyone anymore.
McKay calls this story one of the biggest cover ups in Boston history and he says the same issues and factors that led to the notorious events of the 1970s could easily repeat themselves. McKay says the lessons of his novel are tragically timeless in that they apply just as easily 30 years ago as they do to the troubled youths and the ghettos of modern day Boston.
