In a number of recent edits, you have added references to Wikipedia articles in an incorrect manner. To add a reference using the cite.php system, you must do the following:

  1. Define the reference in the article text using the <ref name=...>...</ref> tags. For example:
This paper says this, that and something else.<ref name=search>Resolving the Effects of Rotation in Altair with Long-Baseline Interferometry, D. M. Peterson et al., ''The Astrophysical Journal'' '''636''', #2 (January 2006), pp. 1087–1097, {{doi|10.1086/497981}}, {{bibcode|2006ApJ...636.1087P}}.</ref>
  2. Once the reference has been defined and named, you can use it again by using the tag format <ref name=... />. For example:
The writers of this paper said this other stuff too.<ref name=search />
  3. If you do not want to use the reference more than once, you can omit the name=... in step 1. For example:
These claims come from a paper which is only referenced once.<ref>Resolving the Effects of Rotation in Altair with Long-Baseline Interferometry, D. M. Peterson et al., ''The Astrophysical Journal'' '''636''', #2 (January 2006), pp. 1087–1097, {{doi|10.1086/497981}}, {{bibcode|2006ApJ...636.1087P}}.</ref>
  4. You must put the template {{reflist}} in the article somewhere, after all <ref...> tags, or no footnotes will be displayed. (There are also certain other templates and tags that can be used in place of {{reflist}}.)
Performing step 2 by itself without performing step 1 will not work, as the software will not know which reference a given name corresponds to.
I hope that this information is helpful to you. The cite.php system is explained in more detail at Wikipedia:Footnotes. Spacepotato (talk) 22:23, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding those names. :) Abyssal (talk) 14:40, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

Resolved

I noticed the article 36 Ursae Majoris to which you have significantly contributed. In particular your first edit of December 13, 2008 introduced a lot of material. That material was sourced within the article it was copied from. Could you please tell me where that material came from, so that I may fix the refs? You could also do it yourself, if you'd like. I'll watch this page for your answer. Thank you. Debresser (talk) 12:43, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User:Auric took care of that. Debresser (talk) 21:40, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
