Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Oregon Coast Forester. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{edit COI}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 02:50, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the notification. I compete in hunting dog competitions but have no conflict of interest with North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. I hold no office and have no financial gain connected to this non-profit. Rather, I was including this NA dog association similar to the American Kennel Club. Can you clarify if you thought text that I was including was creating a sense of conflict of interest? I would offer that many of the dog breed pages promote standards and breed associations, and this one promotes standards for testing 30 different dog breeds. I was using other pages as a guide for this one, and I am not sure where it appeared that I had a conflict of interest. Thank you. Oregon Coast Forester (talk) 03:31, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- Well, this edit is obviously promotional, with its "oldest, largest, and most successful" stuff sourced to the organization's own website. Drmies (talk) 12:22, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, I can see that I borrowed too directly from the website. I appreciate the note. It was not my intention to promote and rather me being unaware of the bias and naively borrowing self-promotion text from the org website. I will say that AKC page states similar promotion of "The AKC is the largest registry of purebred dogs in the U.S. and is the only not-for profit registry, as well as the most well-known and the most influential." I guess I wasn't sure where the line was for promotion unless it is the source being 3rd party vs. the org website. Thank you again. Oregon Coast Forester (talk) 04:56, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
