List of Moments in History that could have impacted Training

Possible turning points in Canadian History that may have led to training initiatives we might want to explore:

- World Wars (ideas: training for troops; training for women on activities men would have done, first aid training - what issues came up that we now needed well-trained Canadians for?)

- Great Depression (ideas: We could look into what re-trainign needed to be done for people to get their jobs back)

- Invention of Automobile & Railroad (ideas: did this change the job-structures in place, and were people now needing to be trained in other areas based on this?)

- Cod Moratorium

Possible Outlines for our Paper

Option 1: By Decade/Timeframe;

Paragraph 1: Intro; Paragraph 2: 1900s - 1920; Paragraph 3: 1920 - 1940; Paragraph 4: 1940 - 1960;

And so on and so forth. In each paragraph, we could cover what historical events happened in that time, and what training advances/initiatives also happened in that time (as a result of). Great website at http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/research/edu20/moments/ that might help us figure this option out.

Option 2:L By Historical Event;

Paragraph 1: Intro; Paragraph 2: Major Historical Event and Training Associated with that; Paragraph 3: 2nd Major Historical Event and training associated with that;

I'm wondering if option 1 might not be easier since this is a group paper? Each of us could take a chunk or two of time and do research ourselves, and if we've decided on a structure (eg: events in that time + training associated + how that helped/changed Canada + any government interventions etc) then it might all come together relatively easily.

Group Paper Outline

Hi team,

I have never used Wiki before so please be patient with me.

I like the idea of choosing a few major historical milestones and focusing on their impact on training. That said, my suggestion for an outline and assignment of tasks is as follows:

group member 1: Introduction and milestone 1 group member 2: Milestone 2 group member 3: Milestone 3 group member 4: Milestone 4 & conclusion

I like the list of historical events already posted including the world war, the great depression (this one could give us an opportunity to reflect on present state of affairs), technology, etc. Maybe we might also consider the introduction and impact of NAFTA, globalization, the Baby boomer effect.

Combination outline?

Hi team,

Stacey, I do agree with you that if we just pick timeframes, we might still have too much to pick from! So i do like your idea of focusing down on one to two major topics within those frames. So, what about if we combine our two ideas into something like:

Writer 1: focuses on pre-1900 to 1930, and chooses 1 to 2 major events in that time period to focus on Writer 2: focuses on 1930 - 1960, and chooses 1 to 2 major events in that time period Writer 3: focuses on 1960 - 1990 and chooses 1-2 events Writer 4: focuses on 1990 - present and future trends, and chooses 1-2 events.

What do we think about that?

Looking at major events we've all identified, these could include: - WW1, WW2, Great Depression, Present Recession, NAFTA, Baby Boomer Effect, Technology Advances (like the invention of the internet and all that comes with it - podcasts, distance ed, etc), Women's Rights, Multiculturalism Policies adopted, and more. We could each choose events we thought worthy of writing about; there seems to be a good list at http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/research/edu20/moments/ or we can choose events of our own interest.

Maybe we can write the intro/conclusion AFTER we've all done our miscellaneous bits to see what the trend is? Or, we could focus on something general like "major events in time have affected the development and implementation of training systems in canada" and use each of the 4 sections to back that up.
