January 2015[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm JohnBlackburne. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Lindisfarne Gospels because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Dear JohnBlackburne, thanks for taking the time to inform me! I honestly thought that the links to current information on facsimiles (relevant to the scholarly community) could be an improvement. Especially in the case of some pages where you reverted my edits, the provided links are highly informative, with codicology information hardly available anywhere else. In any case, I'm just a beginner on WP so it's not a big deal. If you're interested, I could highlight what I believe is useful to keep (for example, the link to images of the Vatican Apicius are not to be found anywhere else). I also have the impression - and I might be wrong! - that you reverted everything in my history, once you found my recent edits, no matter what, without checking the added value of my edits. Anyway, thanks for the discussion and keep up the good work!
I did have a look at all of the links. And they are all to a commercial site which is concerned with selling facsimiles of manuscripts. These are expensive and individual items, so of course it has lots of information about the things on sale. But it is still a commercial site, and they are not allowed, unless the article is about the site (such as an article about Amazon linking to it). The policy is at WP:ELNO, and commercial sites come in particular under #5.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 22:59, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
