A tag has been placed on your user page, User:Portlandfilm/Portland film festival, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be blatant advertising which only promotes or publicises a company, product, group or service, and which is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages; user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you can indicate why the page is not blatant advertising, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: Click here to contest this speedy deletion which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy deletion candidate). Doing so will take you to your user talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also edit this page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would help make it encyclopedic. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. I am One of Many (talk) 02:25, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy.  You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose.

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. Thank you. • This really is the only reason. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt, but the bottom line is that creating a page for yourself is seen as promotional, as is some of the writing on the page. Phrases such as "telling a compelling story through the cinematic craft." might not be seen as overly promotional to you, but it's the type of thing that you see on press releases. It's intent is to market the film and attract people to submit movies and go to the festival. Now there are issues of tone overall. For instance this part: "Leake and Cornelius insist the Portland Film Festival is different from the others due to both its content and the passion they bring to the project. Leake says the festival isn’t about high production values, but good stories, regardless of where they come from." This might not be promotional per se, but it is written in a very non-neutral "just plain folks" sort of way that violates our neutral point of view policy. I'm going to try to fix the entry, but I have two requests:
First is that you change your username. Going by the film festival you work for is not appropriate even if creating an article for the film festival is your main intent. It's seen as a promotional username and I'll be honest: people will automatically assume that you're here to spam and they'll assume that you will try to work weasel words in there. Saying that is a little blunt, but we've had so many people come on here to edit for something that they have a conflict of interest with (only to constantly revert changes because they weren't positive enough) that a lot of people have gotten a bit gun shy. Be aware that having an article on here means that an article will contain "warts and all". Meaning that if there's a controversy surrounding your festival and the media latches on to it, we have to add it. Of course if it's a single news article we probably wouldn't add that, but if the media reported that you guys were putting brain slugs on to people's heads to control their minds, we'd have to add it.
Secondly, that you get someone from WP:FILM to help you out and ensure that there are no COI or NPOV issues with the article. This is a WikiProject devoted entirely to films, so they'll help with finding sources and will help keep fears of promotional articles at bay. They won't guarantee that the article will make it to the mainspace, but they'll keep a lot of fears at bay. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 06:14, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Another note: just existing (WP:ITEXISTS) or being a non-profit doesn't mean that something is exempt from sounding promotional or that they automatically merit an article. You must show that the festival has been covered by reliable sources (WP:RS) that cover the event in-depth. WP:PRIMARY sources such as the event website, WP:TRIVIAL mentions, notifications of events, or non-reliable blog-type coverage doesn't count towards notability. • Another thing I noted while I was cleaning the article: excessive linking in the external links section can be seen as linkspam. For example, a link to your website would suffice as all we need in the EL section. Linking to every bit of social media that your festival is on is seen as excessive and spammy. This might not have been your intent, but this is how it comes across on Wikipedia. The reason why we don't link to everything is that there are so many social media sites out there and unless the topic in question is extremely, extremely well known on that SMS (as in having news articles written about something they put on say, Twitter) then the general rule of thumb is that we don't add it because it's assumed that you should have all of those social links on your website already, making the linking on the WP entry redundant. • I fixed the article up. It's a stub, but it's a neutrally written one. Now the big problem I saw was that we didn't have enough coverage to really show that this merits an article right now. This isn't a "no, never", however. Now assuming that you're able to hold the second one next year, once that second year's news coverage gets released we can add it to the article and then put it in the mainspace. I say "assume" since a lot can happen in a year and sometimes even the best planned events can fall through for reasons that you can't predict or prevent. What I'd recommend doing in the meantime is just helping to edit various other articles on Wikipedia. This will not only help you learn the ropes, rules, and whatnot of Wikipedia, but it'll also help give you a little more "street cred" on here. People are more likely to want to work with others when they know that you're going to help edit the general Wikipedia. Not that you have to edit anything other than what you are interested in (IE, films) mind you, but people are more kindly towards COI editors if they know that you are here for more than just the film festival. In any case, the stub we currently have should be safe from any further deletion attempts. If all else fails, I'll put it in my userspace for everyone to work on if someone is worried about further COI. I do want to note that you did the right thing in making a userspace copy first. While sometimes articles can still be deleted in the userspace, you have a lot more freedom to edit and learn there. I just hope that all of this doesn't deter you from further editing. I'm going to let another editor or two know to keep an eye out on you (in case you need any help) and I'll do the same. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 07:05, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
