Welcome to the Userbox project! Your best place to start learning how to make userboxes is probably Wikipedia:Userboxes. Drop me a note if you need more help! _ Ahunt (talk) 12:06, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Resetti 4 Prez. I noticed that you are seeking to be adopted, and I am more than happy to accept your offer. I have been on Wikipedia for almost two years and have been able to gain both basic and advanced knowledge of Wikipedia Markup Language (the way you type to make userboxes and templates) as well as many basic and advanced Wikipedia guidelines. If there is anything you are willing to ask, then I'll be more than happy to answer your questions. I will also make suggestions on editing style and fact reliability to ensure that you know your way around. I hope to hear from you soon! ♦Leo-Roy 19:48, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures in userboxes

[edit]

Hi R4P: Nice to hear from you. It sounds like you are doing some design work! There is a pretty good explanation of all aspects of making a userbox at Wikipedia:Userboxes#Constructing_a_userbox, but it is a bit complex. If you want to see an example of how to incorporate an image, have a look at this example of one of mine. The place where it says "Image:Quadracycle7011A.jpg" is the actual image. You can use any image that is uploaded to Wikipedia or Commons. Please keep in mind that you have to use non-copyright images in userboxes as they are not "fair use" under US law. Any image that you find on Commons or that you upload yourself and mark as a free image can therefore be used.

If you need more help let me know! - Ahunt (talk) 13:08, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again - thanks for your question. The edit your are wondering about is this one carried out by the BJBot. The bot removed your use of the SNL logo in that edit. The link in its edit summary Wikipedia:NFCC#9 actually explains why it removed the image: "Restrictions on location. Non-free content is allowed only in articles (not disambiguation pages), and only in article namespace, subject to exemptions." Essentially you can only use free images in your userboxes or lettering. The SNL logo, like most TV show and corporate logos is copyrighted. Copyrighted images can only be used in Wikipedia under the "fair use" provisions of US copyright law. This means that they are only legal to be used to illustrate the article on SNL and are actually illegal copyright violations if they are used on user pages , including in userboxes. That is why there is a bot that goes around and looks for illegal copyrighted images on users pages and deletes them! The solution is to either make your own free images up and upload them yourself or to do as you have done so and use lettering instead. I hope that all makes sense? If you feel free to leave me more questions! - Ahunt (talk) 00:54, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Signature Help

[edit]

Signatures aren't completely hard once you get the hang of bold text templates and color templates. What I did to master them was to find a talk page message from somebody with a custom signature, clicking the "edit" button and looking at the code to find out how to use codes and what they look like. Just do that without changing the page, and navigate away so you don't accidentally change something. And make sure you don't steal the same signature.

Another thing you could do is read Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing_your_signature. Feel free to ask me questions if you're confused or need help with something. To reach my talk page quickly, just click the "Roy!" part of my signature, and that will bring you straight to my talk page. Leo-Roy!review me 21:13, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nintendo task force membership update

[edit]

I am currently gauging the active membership of the Nintendo task force. I have split the members list into an "active list" and an "inactive list" and have moved all members (except myself) to the "inactive list". To confirm that you're still an active participant in the task force, please go to the membership list at WP:NIN and simply move your name from the "inactive list" back onto the "active list". If you no longer wish to be a member, simply remove your name from the list. After two weeks (around 23 March 2009), I will remove all names on the inactive list. Thank you, and hope you're still interested, MuZemike 20:36, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Snowman Suicide.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the file appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
