State Archives are not copyright protected[edit]

Just because the records are public doesn't mean they're not copyrighted. On the federal level, works are in the public domain. As far as state and local governments, works are copyrighted (with some exceptions, like Massachusetts, whose records are not copyrighted). See Wikipedia:Copyrights#Works_by_state_governments_of_the_United_States for more information. In the case of Tennessee, there is a clear copyright statement at the bottom of their Library & Archives website and there is nothing I can see or find that indicates release of their records into the public domain or with a Wikipedia-compatible license. The content in question that you have pasted into the article is a summary of a Civil War-era daybook, which is copyrighted. The writings in the daybook itself would be in the public domain due to their age.

You are welcome to summarize and paraphrase the contents of the PDF in question as long as the paraphrasing isn't a close resemblance of the source material and as long as the work is properly cited with inline citations. To add, even if the work wasn't copyrighted, the manner in which you were placing it into the article wasn't constructive as Wikipedia is not meant to be an indiscriminate collection of information. If you would like to start organizing information to put into an article, you can use your sandbox at User:Rootvine/sandbox, but please note that any copyright infringing content placed there can and will be deleted as well.
