January 2017

I have discovered that some of the content in Draft:Lightning Network appears to have been copied from https://www.safaribooksonline.com/library/view/mastering-bitcoin/9781491902639/ch01.html, a copyright web page. I see you have received multiple warnings for copyright violations in the past. All content you add to this wiki must be written in your own words, and when copying material from one article to another within the wiki, you must provide proper attribution. Further copyright violations will result in you being blocked from editing. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 23:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

@Diannaa: Surely a draft page or sandbox (i.e. a work in progress that is unindexed) like this page that is being used to rewrite text that is under copywrtight is okay? There is no indication this page was to be published in current form or is anywhere near completion,--Sparkyscience (talk) 09:14, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
Sorry but you are mistaken. Copyright content is not permitted anywhere - not in sandboxes, drafts, talk pages, user talk pages, or article space. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:09, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
@Diannaa: I've just done a more thorough check and the book in question, both first and second editions, has been released in full under a Creative Commons licence on github by the original author. In such case, presumably this draft page is not an issue?--Sparkyscience (talk) 21:48, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
Unfortunately the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License is not a compatible license, since our license allows both commercial use and derivatives. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:51, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
@Diannaa: the first edition files look to still be licensed under Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License which states that adapting and building upon the material for any purpose, even commercially, is allowed?--Sparkyscience (talk) 22:06, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
Sorry but Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License is not a compatible license either, because the Wikimedia legal team deems that it is not backwards-compatible with our with CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Please see Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright#Can I add something to Wikipedia that I got from somewhere else? for more information on licenses. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 22:12, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

@Diannaa: I can see that the Wikimedia Foundation engaged in a community consultation about an upgrade from CC 3.0 to 4.0 some time ago, I'm guessing a license upgrade would resolve the issue. There does not seem to be any update on the process since this consultation, where can I find out or who can I contact to obtain more information about the status of this proposal?--Sparkyscience (talk) 10:11, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Perhaps ask User:JSutherland (WMF); he is the person who created the community consultation page. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:06, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
