Adding references

[edit]

I see that you've been adding references to some articles that don't have them - thank you! I don't know what the newcomer tasks interface looks like when you're doing this, so you might not be aware that these articles are tagged with Template:Unreferenced. When you add a citation, it would be helpful if you could also change the Unreferenced template (at the top of the article) to Template:More citations needed, like I did here. This isn't an obvious part of the process, so no worries at all, but it's helpful to note the current status of the article and avoid the article being recommended to someone else once you've already added a citation.

Additionally, if you're enjoying adding citations, you might be interested in Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced articles/Backlog drives/February 2024, an ongoing effort to add references (as you've been doing), with a friendly competition and some awards. :)

Let me know if you have any questions! Thank you again for your work. Aerin17 (tc) 21:06, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Yeah I've just been trying to do more referencing so I can contribute to more articles but I'm still getting the hang of it.
I have seen the template that says unreferenced at the top of the article but I didn't know it was something that could/should be changed so thank you for showing me how I can change this 😁
I'll definitely have to check that project out because now I understand referencing a bit better I want to try it a bit more!
I'm still struggling with where exactly to add certain citations because I from what I know they can be added to ends of sentences/paragraphs but I've also seen in the middle of sentences too which isn't something I fully understand.
Thanks for the help and teaching me something new! Squawker121 (talk) 10:46, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to help!
In regards to where to place citations, I believe the reason to place a citation in the middle of the sentence would be if different citations support different parts of the sentence, or if there's something especially contentious that needs to be cited directly. WP:Inline citation says, If a word or phrase is particularly contentious, an inline citation may be added next to it within a sentence, but adding the citation to the end of the sentence or paragraph is usually sufficient.
