BACKGROUND
Alberto José Figueras is an Argentine economist and researcher. He was born on March 31, 1952 in Cordoba, Argentina. He was the only child of José Figueras Castells and his wife María Esther Viguera Rojo de Figueras.
EDUCATION
Bachelor of Business Administration, National University, Cordoba, Argentina,1973. Bachelor of Science in Accounting, National University, Cordoba, 1975. Bachelor of Economics, National University, Cordoba, 1978. He has courses in Paris about sociology and philosophy of Art. He obtained a postgraduate degree in Capital Markets (IBMEC, Rio de Janeiro), 1982, and also a postgraduate degree in Project Evaluation (Pontifical Catholic University of Chile), 1988. He also obtained the degree of Specialist in Scientific Communication (FAMAF-UNC)(2017). He was Ph.D. (Doctor of Economics) in 1992, National University, Cordoba, Argentina.
CAREER
Researcher at “Escuela de Política Social” ("School of Social Policy"), National University, Cordoba, from 1981 to1986. Researcher at the “Instituto de Economía”, National University, Cordoba, from 1990. He was Assistant Professor, from 1980 to 1989. He is Professor of Economics, since 1989; and in particular he is a teacher of History of Economic Thought since 1992. He was Professor of Sociology, Catholic University, Cordoba, from 1986 to1988. He served as adviser to the “Camara de Comercio Exterior”, Cordoba, Argentina from 1982-1986. He was also a junior researcher at the renowned bureau for economic studies, IIERAL de Fundación Mediterránea (IIERAL of the Mediterranean Foundation), in Córdoba, directed by the famous Argentine minister of economy, Domingo Felipe Cavallo. Professor Figueras has developed classes in several postgraduate programs at different universities, since 1992.
He is currently Associate Director of the magazine “Actualidad Económica” (Economic News), a publication of the Institute of Economics, National University, Córdoba, Argentina.
• He was Director of “Centro de Estudios Científicos en Ciencias Económicas de la Federación Argentina de Ciencias Económicas” (“Center for Scientific Studies in Economic Sciences - FACPCE), Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 1992 to 2006.
• He was Deputy Director of the Department of Economics, National University, Cordoba, from 1993 to 1995.
• He was also Deputy Director of the Institute of Economics, National University, Cordoba, 2004-2017; and Director of Pension Fund of the Professional Council of Economic Sciences, Cordoba, 1992-1996.
• He also directed the "Specialization Course in Project Evaluation" at the, Postgraduate Secretariat, National University, Catamarca, Faculty of Economic Sciences, from 2003 to 20072.
He is a member of the Argentine Association of Political Economy (Asociación Argentina de Economía Política); and a member of the National Network of Researchers in Economics (Red Nacional de Investigadores en Economía, RedNIE) of Argentina.
Among his achievements, Alberto José Figueras has been listed as a prominent economist by Marquis Who's Who in the 1990s. His awards include the following: Teodoro Mario Fornaciari Prize of the Professional Council of Economic Sciences, 1988; Apolinar Lopez Verde Prize, also of the Professional Council of Economic Sciences, 1994; and Fray Luca Pacioli Prize of the Argentine Federation of Professional Councils of Economic Sciences, 1993.
PUBLICATIONS AND MAIN RESEARCH AREA
His usual research topic has been regional problems, from his doctoral thesis "Regional effects of macroeconomic policies", 1992.
