Peer Review

[edit]

I am reviewing and suggesting edits to the Wikipedia article for Frank X Walker. I suggest removing the uncited "received the 2002-2003 Jesse Stuart Award presented by the Kentucky School Media Association" in the "Work" section due to the lack of unbiased sources. I also suggest adding a citation in the "Awards" section for the 2014 NAACP Image Award. [1] There is no citation or link to Coal Black Voices at all, so that can be added as well.

The "Biography" section could use some better organization by adding subheadings for the different parts of Walker's life, instead of a block of text (for example, having an "Early Life" subheading for the paragraph about before going to college, "Education" subheading for his time in college, and "Professional Life" subheading for his accomplishments after college). I also think there should be more information about what Walker has worked on in the biography, instead of relying on the bulleted sections to hold all the information. One addition could be to talk about Coal Black Voices: "Walker was involved in the documentary Coal Black Voices, where he was a consulting producer." Jed's response to Matthew's post:

Effective Edits I think your edit so far is off to a great start. I do agree that you should remove information that is not cited because who knows if it is true. You mentioned that the biography section "could use some better organization by adding headings" (Winston, "Wiki Edit",2021,para 2). I think that is a great idea, I do think some subheadings would help the flow of the article and keep it well organized. The bulleted points do seem short and out of place I could see rewriting the awards section into a sentences and providing some more information about Frank winning the awards.

My Suggestions I noticed in the lead paragraph of Frank X Walker it does not mention him being an editor or video producer. I think adding that would help cover the major points covered in the article. It seems to maybe sell Frank short as he has won many awards for his works but only lists the Kentucky Poet Laureate award. I would suggest adding a portion saying something along the line of "He has won several awards for his different works".

What I think would benefit your article the most is providing updated sources and removing information that cannot be referenced to a source. I clicked through the sources to look at the credibility of the sources and noticed that some of the links do not work. The following are sources didn't work for me:

I wouldn't take everything out that is related to the non-working links but instead try to find new or updated sources. I know it sounds like a lot of work but I think would be the best way without having to rewrite everything and starting from scratch. I see it like putting together the pieces to a puzzle.Jed11134 (talk) 08:34, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@TheEffect1776: Hi Matt, Dr. Sarraf here. Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed description of your proposed edits. A few thoughts/questions:
  • Has anyone on the article's talk page discussed removing the uncited sentence? I just want to be sure that change is building off of a conversation on the talk page. If not, I suggest that during the Edit-a-thon you propose that change on the talk page rather than making the change. It's a big change, so you'll want the views of other editors.
  • I like your ideas for added headings. You might consider just adding one heading during the Edit-a-thon and again, first post on the talk page about that heading addition. KjessJKT (talk) 16:01, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
