Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Tscott29, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was Drexel Hamilton, which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, visit the Teahouse, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Hi Isabelle,
Yes that’s correct, I work for the company. I have noticed false information on wikipedia about my company. Can you please advise what I should do about it?
Thanks,
Trevor 47.23.19.3 (talk) 21:18, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Read WP:PAID and comply with it; basically being very explicit about your affiliation and then not editing the article but instead suggesting changes on the talk page (accompanied by reliable sources).
Also, it is not a requirement, but it is very strongly advised to choose whether you're going to edit while logged out or while logged in rather than jumping between the two, especially when dealing with something fuzzy like a conflict of interest issue. I don't quite understand. Anyone can go in and randomly add untrue things about my business to the wikipedia page, but I, as a representative of my company who is under the scrutiny of harsh industry regulators to maintain truthfulness and integrity, am not allowed to openly make corrections to the page?
Also, for a private business, how can I provide reputable sources? The sources of information about my company are and would be first person, especially being that it is a private business.
I would like my company page deleted if it were possible, solely because of the inaccurate information and the effort that I would have to put forth to rectify this issue. Can you please fill me on the procedure to do have this page removed from wikipedia? Tscott29 (talk) 02:32, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have almost no control over your company's Wikipedia page and cannot have it deleted just because you dislike the content; see Wikipedia:Ownership of content and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. As AntiDionysus said above, you need to follow Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure and suggest changes on the talk page. To find reliable sources, you can have a look at Help:Find sources and Help:Referencing for beginners. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 02:49, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where did I say that I wanted my company page deleted "just because I dislike the content"?
At this point, you are blatantly hosting false information about the company. Is blatant misinformation not against any sort of policy on the platform?
While I understand the rules of Wikipedia state that completely false information is entirely acceptable, it is distasteful, distrustful, and the reason why academia does not consider the platform a reputable source of information. It is very frustrating that such a prominent source of information on the internet lacks any kind of good faith and truthfulness.
Thanks for clarifying. Tscott29 (talk) 03:03, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The information you tried to remove is not solely talking about Deutsche Bank, and it seems to accurately reflect the sources. It is relevant because the sources indicate that the company hired someone who was let go from Deutsche Bank. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 03:18, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you would like to contest this, you can follow WP:PAID and make an edit request on the talk page. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 03:21, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, you cannot use personal knowledge or other unpublished information, since all information must be verifiable. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 02:57, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well no, anyone can't go in and add untrue things, because others would notice that those additions weren't supported by sources and would undo the edits. Wikipedia is far from perfect on that but is frankly very good. And you can make that process much faster by pointing out any errors you see.
And yes, you as a representative of the company are held to a higher standard because you have a Conflict of Interest; your relationship with the company and the fact that it is in your interest to see it portrayed in a positive light may compromise your ability to be neutral about it, even if you're trying to be. This isn't a judgement on you or your intentions individually, it's a policy that was put in place because of past experience.
You are welcome to nominate the page for deletion if you would like. It would need to meet one of Wikipedia's criteria for deletion. Containing some inaccurate information generally isn't sufficient to warrant deletion, unless the page is so egregiously bad that it makes more sense to just delete it and start over than to try to fix it. So if you nominate for deletion, you'll probably need to make the case that it is that bad; otherwise you may get told that you should just point out the bits that are problematic so that other editors can flag and work on them.
Regarding sources: Wikipedia is only meant to be a summary of publicly-available information on a subject. People trust Wikipedia because it is very obvious and transparent where everything on it is sourced from, and readers can go and verify for themselves if they so wish. If some fact is attributable only to private/proprietary company information, then that fact doesn't really belong on the Wikipedia page. You'd be asking us basically just to take your word for it, which we can't do for any user at the best of times, and definitely can't do in case of a conflict of interest. AntiDionysius (talk) 09:19, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Understood all.
The issue at hand is that the current sources on the page are out-dated. The page does not reflect substantial changes that were made to the company, when in-fact the company was purchased from the old owners years ago and the current state is entirely different from how it is depicted on the Wikipedia page. However, there are no online sources to support this at this time, due to the private nature of the business/industry.
It it outside of my control to track down the original authors of the sources and ask them to amend or delete their articles. Can you advise what I/we should do about this?
My current thinking would be to create our own "wiki" page on the company website that openly denounces the Wikipedia page depiction of the company. Tscott29 (talk) 10:36, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You must comply with the requirements of WP:PAID and WP:COI. Do not create additional accounts to edit the page, or you will be blocked. If you would like changes to be made to the article, you can make edit requests on the article's talk page. I will note that I have removed the "ethics" section from the article, as I do not think its contents were relevant to the article. —Ingenuity (t • c) 21:37, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
