Hi. Well done for creating the account! Just because you don't expect to be editing much, doesn't mean the account isn't justified. You'll get a much fairer hearing on most matters if you have a username (rightly or wrongly), and you can create your own userpage (anon IPs have to request an established user to create one for them), containing all manner of content which may not be as notable as is required for a mainstream article.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't drift away from refereeing due to the lack of support by the authorities (although it didn't help my morale much). I had to give up due to physical reasons - I had crammed my weekends so full of matches that I overdid it, I suppose. I would do a youth match Saturday morning, local district league match Saturday afternoon, Sunday league match the following morning, and another youth match Sunday afternoon (though not every single weekend, but most weekends). Some Monday mornings I would get up and hardly be able to put one foot in front of the other.

As for expecting the greater public to accept that decisions are made "in the opinion of the referee", I'm afraid each member of the public believes that their opinion exceeds that of the experienced qualified referee. It's much easier to get players and managers in local leagues to accept it, but then they are more knowledgable in football matters, and recognise a good referee. Best behaviour can be got from players and managers by applying the Laws fairly and firmly, and using discretion (playing advantage rule, etc.) freely. What they won't accept is a referee who lays down the Law without explanation or justification, and that's where problems set in.

Anyway, before I ramble too much, I'll stop, and wish you success in your on-field career. Hope to cross your path again. If there's any advice relating to refereeing that I can help with, please post to my talk page, or use the email facility in Wikipedia. Best wishes. Ref (chew)(do) 23:27, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
