I notice that PlayStation is listed as a redirect from misspelling, while PlayStation 2 is listed as a redirect from alternate spelling. PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 have no category. I'm not sure how to proceed, but it seems we should strive for consistancy. Any suggestions? –RHolton02:05, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They should all be alternate spelling, sorry for the confusion. I was tagging around and I must missed my mark there. -- ReyBrujo 03:11, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some are not being done in a useful way...[edit]

One of the major points of the redirects from misspellings is that the link is actually wrong, thus (for instance) changing ((C++Builder) to ((C++ Builder|C++Builder)) is not correct. All that does is remove a redirect (which is inexpensive), but it does so at the expense of showing that the text link is in fact a spelling error. This needs to be done more carefully. -- Steven Fisher 06:00, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User pages[edit]

Should links from user pages and other metadata be corrected? -- Steven Fisher 06:21, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can make a list for the other namespaces if you want. I only did articles because those seemed most important.
Also, La Nina is not a mispelling. Or, rather, it is, but it's a mispelling for La Niña, not El Niño-Southern Oscillation. La Nina and El Nino are not the same. -- Steven Fisher 06:25, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're right; I should have explained that. The "correct" links listed are actually the target of the redirect, which isn't necessarily a good correction of the misspelling.
I don't necessarily think it's necessary to knock the items off the list. I was just asking because at the time I checked, La Nina was actually clear except for user namespace links. -- Steven Fisher 06:38, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, there's no way to fix the problem at the moment. My automated script only knows that La Nina redirects to El Niño-Southern Oscillation. There's no way for it to figure out that La Niña is the correct spelling. One way of fixing this might be to pass the correct spelling as a parameter to the {{R from misspelling}} template.
By the way, Category:Redirects from title without diacritics is probably a better category for La Nina. Wmahan. 06:16, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I didn't put it in there, I just noted the problem. :) -- Steven Fisher 06:38, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Something to watch out for[edit]

The misspelling Konigsburg redirects to Kaliningrad, which is the modern name for the city of Königsberg. (Don't be distracted by the diacritic, the spelling error is burg vs. berg.) In this sort of situation, you certainly don't want to go replacing Konigsburg with Kaliningrad. Instead, replace Konigsburg with Königsberg. I would also say not to add a piped link, since at some point in the future, there may be separate articles. –RHolton02:17, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreeing with everything above, I made {{R from misspelling}} take an optional parameter giving the correct spelling. Thus at Konigsburg, {{R from misspelling}} becomes {{R from misspelling|Königsberg}}. The next time I update the list, it should suggest KonigsburgKönigsberg rather than KonigsburgKaliningrad. Nice work, Wil! –RHolton03:12, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metagaming[edit]

Metagaming (Concept) (with capital C), which is listed on the page, was moved to metagaming. I don't know if I should edit the page or not, so I thought that I would tell you here. I did not keep it as a redirect, because it is not useful as a search or linking term. -- Kjkolb 05:56, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why I haven't updated the list[edit]

First of all, thanks to everyone helping to fix the articles in this list, especially Rholton.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to update the list recently. When I created it, I had access to a relatively up-to-date copy of the English Wikipedia database on the Toolserver. Since then, database replication was disabled for the English wiki because it was slowing down the server.

My understanding is that access to the English database will be available again once a new disk drive is installed, but I don't know when that will be. Wmahan. 05:33, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting project[edit]

I'm using AWB to do all the 'middle ages' to Middle Ages just now. --Guinnog 03:39, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've now finished but I see it was already removed from the list. --Guinnog 01:10, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In case anyone is still watching this page, there's now an updated report here: Wikipedia:Database reports/Linked misspellings. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:35, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
