Vallavarayar Vandhiyadevan was a feudatory of the Chola kings from the Mavali clan he is one among the famous Vana chieftain of the cholasRaja Raja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I the husband of Raja Raja I's elder sister .[1] The territory under his authority was known as Vallavaraiyarnadu.[2] Vandiyadevan is idealized in Kalki Krishnamurthy's (Kalki) famous novel Ponniyin Selvan.

Origins

He was believed to be from the Mavali Clan who are called as Vanar, banas, vanthiryar and vonkovarayar Kalki Krishnamurthy strongly believed his clan is Vaanar Kulam (Bana Kingdom / Magadai Mandalam).

Evidences

His name is referred in Thanjavur Big Temple inscription in which he is referred to as the husband of Kundavai Pirattiyar.[3]
