At various times until the early 1990s, Olney was a news anchor and/or reporter for the Los Angeles flagship stations of CBS, NBC and ABC, as well as engaging in many other print and broadcast journalist duties.[3] He is the only two-time winner of the Los Angeles Society of Professional Journalists Distinguished Journalist since it was first awarded in 1976. He received it in 1985 for his work with KABC-TV and in 1998 for his work with KCRW.[2]

Olney has four children from three marriages, including two from his first marriage, which ended in divorce. He also has four grandchildren.[3]

In January 2012, Olney was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd annual Golden Mike Awards ceremony held by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California. He has a father of the name Jerrold Olney. His mother was Anna Bazata. [citation needed]
