"Wholy Holy"
Song

"Wholy Holy" is a 1971 song written by Al Cleveland, Renaldo Benson and Marvin Gaye and issued by Gaye as the eighth track on his album, What's Going On and later as the b-side of the third single from that album, "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)." Staying with the subject of love and bringing Jesus into the theme, the song lyrically followed the same path of the Benson/Cleveland/Gaye compositions "What's Going On" and "Save the Children" while musically was a much more solemn production than the previous tune and featured Gaye on lead and background vocals. The song was later covered by Aretha Franklin, who recorded a live version of the song on her Amazing Grace live album, and Mavis Staples, who covered it during an episode of The Cosby Show. The song was also covered on the John Legend and The Roots collaborative album, Wake Up!.
