Class Description[edit]

This course addresses the interactions between economics and social development as manifesting in areas like education, health and poverty alleviation. The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with the social aspects of economic policy-making. The sub-topics covered as part of this course are: Welfare Economics, Education, Health, Poverty, Social Welfare, Gender Studies and Demography.

Assignment Overview[edit]

Over the course of the semester the students in this class will be completing a series of tasks that will allow them to familiarize themselves with the Wikipedia community and practices, understand the highly developed style of Wikipedia, complete research on a focused topic of the student's choice, and write (or substantially revise) a Wikipedia article. Considering that the subject is an inter-disciplinary one, the students can choose from the wider gamut of social sciences, subject to approval from the course teachers.

Due July 24[edit]

  • Create a username
  • Post your username to the students section of this page

Due July 24-31[edit]

  • Explore help resources
  • Practice the following six editing skills in your sandbox: add text, add headers & subheaders, create a bulleted list, add a link to a Wikipedia article, add a link to an external page on the internet, format text (bold & italics), create a table
  • “Like” the Wikipedia On Campus Facebook page (optional)

Due August 7[edit]

  • Leave a comment on a classmate’s Talk page
  • Identify at least three articles related to your topic of choice
  • Make a minimum of 20 edits (comments, copyedits, references, etc.) to articles related to your proposed topic
  • Select an article
  • Post your article topic beside your username on the Wikipedia course page

Due August 7-21[edit]

  • Conduct in depth research on your topic and gather sources
  • On your article’s talk page (discussion page), list a bibliography of sources and proposed changes you’d like to make to the article or concepts you would like to include
  • Add the following code to the top of your article’s talk page to mark it as the subject of your assignment. Note: You must retrieve the code from the "edit" space of this page.

  • Inform your campus ambassador of your activities by writing on his or her talk page
  • Begin editing/writing the article based on your proposed changes and other conversation with Wikipedians

Due August 21-September 30[edit]

  • Ask your campus ambassador for feedback about your contributions to the article
  • Nominate your article for “Did You Know” status
  • Continue research on your topic
  • Work on your article with the help of your professor and your campus ambassador

Due October 1-8[edit]

  • Continue expanding and making changes to your article based on suggestions from Wikipedians, your campus ambassadors, and your professor

Due October 8-14[edit]

  • Present Wikipedia article during class
  • Complete Wikipedia article due Oct 14
