Event Wrap

The WP:WA Project was pleased to have Jimmy Wales in attendance as our guest of honour for a breakfast meeting in Kings Park. Jimmy was happy to take the time from his gruelling Australian schedule to meet up with the locals, and was greeted with the traditional local welcome (G'day Mate) by some of the group.

The meeting was extremely well attended, particularly after some inadvertent publicity and interest from local print and radio media outlets in the days leading up to the event, causing registrations to double. In attendance were over twenty people, including a number of local administrators (including one the WP:WA admin team was not previously aware of), current and aspiring local editors, as well as members of the Western Australian Internet Association and UWA University Computer Club.

During the open forum discussion, attendees were able to engage in a lively and wide-ranging discussion on many relevant WP topics including inclusion and participation, RfA processes, the foundation and the future, as well as talking about some current and ongoing local project issues in the wider context of WP. This was not before a pertinent and joking point being raised regarding inter-capital rivalries and cautioning him on using the term Football in some states due to their meanings towards different football codes.

After some quick photo opportunities with the group, the meeting had regretably come to an end with Jimmy moving onto his next engagement, an educational conference being held in Burswood.

It was noted afterwards that the meeting was extremely positive, with our thanks to SatuSuro, Gnangarra and others for putting the event together. The project fully intends to continue organising similar events thought the year, and hopes to use it as a forum to encourage wider project participation and hopefully to foster collaboration amongst participants to drive future article improvement initiatives.
