What is #1Lib1Ref?

1Lib1Ref is a campaign inviting every librarian on Earth to improve the quality of Wikipedia articles by adding missing citations. Any citation to a reliable source is a benefit to Wikipedia readers worldwide. The goal is for every participant to add a single reference to Wikipedia during the campaign period, which runs from January 15 to February 5. Western is hosting three events during which you can learn about Wiki editing, become a Wiki Editor yourself and help us eliminate the backlog of "citation needed" notices.

Why participate?

  • This is also an opportunity to meet and network with library workers throughout Western Libraries.

What to expect

  • You will receive an email with a Zoom invitation.
  • Join us one or all three of the dates for a quick introduction/demo and a coffee hour.
  • This is a drop-in session so feel free to join and leave at your convenience.
  • There will be people available to help you get started or you can follow the self-guided instructions below. If you need help during the Zoom session, please turn on your microphone or write in the chat box.
  • The goal is to add at least 1 citation and tag the edit with #1Lib1Ref so we can track our impact.

Instructions

  1. Create a Wikipedia Account
    (Optional) Switch to visual editor mode (this will make it easier to add citations). Once you are logged in, select ‘Preferences’ at the top of the Wikipedia page. Navigate to the ‘Editing’ tab, and if it is not already unticked, untick the ‘Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta’ box, and select ‘Show me both editor tabs’ from the drop-down menu.
  2. Register as a Wikipedia Editor on Western University's Dashboard for the #1Lib1Ref Canada 2021 Campaign here

  3. Find a Wikipedia page that has a [citation needed] tag. If you do not have a page you would like to work on, then you can use the automatic generated tool,Citation Hunt.
  4. Ensure that you have the permissions to 'Edit' the Wikipedia page. At the top of the Wikipedia page there should be an 'Edit' option if you are logged in. If there is no ‘Edit option”, the page may be protected, and only certain Wikipedia users/administrators can edit the page.
  5. Once you have found a [citation needed] and an appropriate source for that citation, navigate to the ‘Edit’ tab of the Wikipedia page, rather than the ‘Read’ tab.
  6. Erase the [citation needed] tag, making sure your cursor is where the citation is needed, and from the top of the editing window, select ‘Cite’
  7. In the ‘Add a citation’ window that pops up after selecting ‘Cite’, select the ‘Automatic’ tab, and copy and paste the URL of your source. Click ‘Generate’
  8. In the top right of the Wikipedia page, select ‘Publish changes’. This will bring up the ‘Save your changes’ window. In the ‘Edit Summary’ box, indicate that you added a citation, and use the #1Lib1Ref and #WLib tags.

Thank you for participating in #1Lib1Ref 2021. Add your name by clicking Edit Source at the top of this page, scrolling down to the Participants section and type your username or real name and click Publish Changes. If you weren't able to attend the virtual coffee hour but still added a citation, make sure you add your name as well!
