Folding@home help[edit]

I just started folding, but I am having difficulty keeping the software from giving me jobs with sufficient leeway. I want the software to give me jobs with at least three-times longer deadlines than the time the job takes to complete. For the first few days, I was getting 7-8 hour jobs with four days to finish, but now it keeps giving me (for instance) 4 day jobs with 4.15 days to finish it. I have my computer on for about seven hours per day, and I only have internet access sporadically (so even if the job is finished I may not be able to submit the results for another ten hours). I will not want to leave it on overnight (I have kids, you know) just to meet a folding deadline. Can anyone help me by telling me where the settings for this can be (if they exist)? I would hate to waste fifteen hours of hard calculations just because the job has a ridiculous deadline. I tried looking around and found only info that I could not understand. In case it matters: Asus GA502IU - Ryzen 7 4800HS, 16GB RAM, GTX1660TI MQ. Thanks! Mxvxnyxvxn (talk) 10:08, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

From reading [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] it sounds like there is no option to choose the deadline of work units you receive. You might be able to help by changing max-packet-size but not necessarily since this only changes the size of the work units and these might have shorter deadlines plus you might not get any work units. You can try talking to the F@h team about the project, but since it can be completed, I'm not certain if there's a solution. It sounds like the inability to manually choose deadlines could be partially intentional as F@h values work finished fast and doesn't want people cherry picking jobs most likely to give them points. It seems that there's a plan to adjust what's assigned by hardware. I'm not sure if there is also a plan or if it already automatically adjusts by failures.

Note there is a difference between deadline and expiration. If you fail to complete result within the deadline but do within the expiration, you can still submit it and it's makes some contribution. (and you get some points but less) How much will vary, after the deadline the work may be sent to someone else. While this wasn't discussed in the forums that I saw, if you're talking something like a 4.15 day deadline and you submit it within 6 days, I assume there's actually a fair chance you will be the first to submit a result depending on how your calculation speed compares to the average, even if it's sent to someone else straight after the 4.15 days. So while the other person may get more points, your result will actually be the more 'useful' possibly.

There's also mention that even if someone else does the work, your result is still useful. t I assume it's a confirmation of the result and one commentator did mention this. (If the results are the same as very likely the case, it's always good for confirmation. If the results are contradictory, it's a sign the work needs to be resubmitted and previous result needs to be treated with caution.)

It's also possible the result won't be resubmitted to someone else in the time between the deadline and you submitting it in which case I assume while you're contributing less in a way (since people are receive the result later than they want), it's maybe not that far off. That said, it sounds like at least as of the middle of last year, there were more resources available on the network than needed so it sounds like often work units would have been resent fast. I assume this was in part due to press coverage of COVID-19 and people stuck at home finding stuff to do, so I don't know if it's still the case.

But especially if it is and you find you keep missing deadlines it might be that Folding@home which desires fast results isn't the best distributed computing project for people your circumstances, and it's worth looking at some other project. There are plenty which don't need results to be return so fast and so don't have such strict deadlines.

Facebook sign-up restrictions[edit]

does Facebook have any restrictions on signing up, after your page has been disabled? am sure they do. however, where is this regulation? and is it possible to obtain permission to sign-up with your email address, after it has been disabled ? Gfigs (talk) 15:52, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think have found the regulation : Terms of Service

3.Your commitments to Facebook and our community

1.Who can use Facebook

".. you cannot use Facebook if: We've previously disabled your account for violations of our Terms or Policies." https://m.facebook.com/terms?refid=69 Gfigs (talk) 16:28, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think they have introduced a 30 day limit to reviews of disabled pages..is there anyway to obtain permission to signup with an email address if it was disabled years ago? Gfigs (talk) 16:36, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I keep trying to visit his page (zuck) to read his posts. however, website won't allow it, keeps saying I should sign-up Gfigs (talk) 17:07, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
have had numerous offers to restore my FB page from people hacking the website..do NOT wish to do this..any help from Mark, your sisters, dad, mom or relatives..an employee of Facebook..appropriate FB email address, contact details of relative or friend who works at FB, would be appreciated..i really need to contact people I grew up with..am hoping it will be possible to apply for permission to sign up again with my disabled email address.. Gfigs (talk) 04:47, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
you cannot just "sign up with another email address"..because they keep records of your name, date of birth, location, and disabled pages Gfigs (talk) 05:00, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
could not contact my relatives on the website, so went against community standards..used a fake name..said something's jokingly about a religion..signed up numerous times..don't think they will ever allow me to signup again Gfigs (talk) 05:20, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ok, so I can see just a few suggested pages, on Mr Zuckerbergs page, without being logged in.. and am not trying to illustrate a point, or anything like that..however, is this automation really working? Gfigs (talk) 06:26, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
