Spermatocyte

Currently the article of spermatocyte barely contains a brief definition and two images that lack a description or tag from where it came from. This article is lacking any form of references and clearly could use work on it. There is a brief post on the talk page by someone further explaining the topic along with some suggested literature. It has been ranked as high-importance in both Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology WikiProjects.

Molecular paleontology[edit]

This article is a stub-article but is claimed as part of seven different WikiProjects, due to its interdisciplinary nature. On the MCB Wikiproject it is rated as Mid-Importance. Right now, the article consists of five sentences and three references, making it sparse of much valuable information. The article could use sections explaining on Applications of Molecular Paleontology, Techniques of Molecular Paleontology, and a history of the subject. It would also benefit from some illustrations.

The talk page is currently blank. This article has a lot of potential, in that this field of study is currently rapidly expanding and there are several new articles on the subject in just the last five years.

Regulator Gene[edit]

This article is a Stub-class article rated of High-Importance to the MCB WikiProject. It currently consists of a brief summary of about 10 sentences on the subject, with three references. Understanding of this subject continues to develop at a rapid pace, although our understanding of Regulator Genes is not yet complete. This article would benefit from several more paragraphs, an expansion on existing information, and new illustrations. This article would be very interesting to pursue, although I think it will likely require more work than several other topics that are simpler and better understood.

Article Selection Rationale[edit]

Molecular Paleontology [edit]

The field of Molecular Paleontology has grown tremendously in the last decade, allowing scientists to pursue evolutionary questions on a genetic level rather than relying on phenotypic variation alone. Sequencing of ancient DNA can yield substantial insights into evolutionary events, species' diasporas, population bottlenecks, and can easily quantify the level of relatedness between any two organisms.[citation needed] Using DNA sequencing to inspect ancestry and relatedness is considered much more reliable than other strategies[citation needed], and this is especially true for species that no longer exist. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, Molecular paleontology has been claimed by 7 different WikiProjects, including as a mid-importance topic for the Molecular and Cellular Biology community.

This article topic is relevant to our Molecular Biology course, because research in this field relies considerably on biotechnology techniques we covered in class including PCR, gel electrophoresis, as well as a very thorough understanding of DNA and DNA screening and isolation techniques. Upon initial inspection, we will likely cover techniques for sequencing DNA preserved in fossils, techniques involved in isolating and amplifying the DNA, information about the history of the subject, information about the oldest organisms which have been sequenced and other notable organisms, environmental conditions needed to preserve DNA for long periods of time, and challenges inherent within this field.[citation needed]
