Strategic Aim 1 - Knowledge Equity

[edit]
  • Develop partnerships that increase access to underrepresented cultural heritage
  • Support the development of minority and indigenous language Wikipedias
  • Encourage new and existing partners to help tackle the gender gap on Wikimedia
  • Identify other areas of inequality and bias and create partnerships to help address these
  • Engage with volunteers and partners across the UK, widening the charity’s geographic reach
  • Diversify content producers by recruiting new editors from under-represented communities
  • Support the development of a more inclusive culture across the Wikimedia projects
  • Ensure that Wikimedia UK’s own policies and practices support diversity and inclusion

Progress

[edit]
  • Two new Women in Red workshops were held in November & December 2020.
    • 5 new articles were created at the 20 November event inc. Nora Wattie, a pioneer of social medicine setting up Glasgow’s internationally renowned ante-natal care service (both before and after the creation of the NHS). Throughout her career, Dr. Wattie was modernising and innovating; initially treating the suffering of women and their babies who were infected with sexually transmitted diseases by husbands returning home after the Second World War, later eliminating diphtheria through a city-wide chain of clinics. For thirty years, Wattie worked on improving women's and children's physical and mental health in the slums of Glasgow, influencing the medical profession and advising government.
    • 12 more articles were edited.
    • 98 edits in total.
    • 6 editors.
    • 5.74K words added.
    • 6 new articles were created at the 4 December event inc. Henrietta Tayler, a London born Jacobite scholar and First World War nurse. Also Dr.Louise Yeoman, a historian and broadcaster specialising in the Scottish witch hunts and 17th century Scottish religious beliefs, and Elizabeth Templeton, a Scottish freelance theologian and educationalist.
    • 27 more articles were edited.
    • 162 edits in total.
    • 7 editors.
    • 5.99K words added.
  • Met with Siobhan Carroll, Staff Pride Network at the University of Edinburgh, and Henry Gray, HIV Scotland, on 11 December 2020 to discuss holding two Wikipedia editing events to celebrate LGBT History month and improve content about HIV in Scotland.
  • Held introductory workshop with Professor Diana Paton and the University of Edinburgh History Society to recruit new editors to a 4 week project to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Scotland, Slavery and Black History. The session on 18 November 2020 had presentations from Professor Lisa Williams and from the UncoverEd project.
  • Sarah Lappin, President of the Edinburgh University Women in STEM Society has approached the resident about holding an International Women's Day editathon focused on women activists and involving multiple other student societies. Further discussions are afoot. So far the societies involved will be Women in STEM, Women in Law, Women in Business, Women in Politics and International Relations, EconWomen and Hoppers (women and gender minorities in Informatics). The theme for IWD2021 is #ChooseToChallenge so we'll be focusing on female mobility in our main event but also plan to have a case study discussion on abortion rights in Poland, an inclusivity panel and feminist movie screening along with some other fun activites. To continue with the theme, we want to focus the editathon on Edinburgh based or Scottish female activists but can include notable women from the different fields of our societies as well.
  • Submitted job descriptions for an Open Collections ('Wikisourceror') student internship next Summer to support the Library & University Collections team develop workflows to share collections to Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource.
  • Submitted job descriptions for an Open Edinburgh (Open Data and Knowledge Equity) student internship next Summer to develop new resources, and course activities to support the teaching of data science and support equality, diversity and inclusion in teaching and learning at the university.

Progress

[edit]
Ernest Hemingway's 1923 passport photo taken a year before the publication of "Indian Camp", one of 53 student translations this semester on the Translation Studies MSc
  • Two How to teach with Wikipedia workshops were held online on 4th November and 2nd December 2020.
  • A new iteration of the Data Fair project (slides) on the Design Informatics MA/MFA programme concluded on 3rd December 2020 with the resident working with the students to produce map visualisations of the types of ritual objects said to be used by the accused witches of Scotland and a visualisation of the accusations of shapechanging.
  • The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment began again in semester one with an increased cohort of 53 students. The students have all now chosen a quality article they wish to translate and will upload their 1,500 to 2,000 word translations by 21 December, peer review by 8th January 2021, and publish to Wikipedia by 15th January 2021. List of articles on assignment page. A new video was created to help demonstrate to students best practice in going about the translation assignment.
  • Glaire Anderson, Lecturer and course leader on the Stars, Talismans and Robots Honours course on Islamic Art, wrote a blogpost on her experiences teaching with Wikipedia and seems keen to repeat the experience in the following years.
  • Discussed with Lisa Otty at the Edinburgh Centre for Data, Culture and Society about a Women in Digital Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences event to be held on March 17th 2021 for their PhD students.

Strategic Aim 3 - Advocacy

[edit]

Create changes in policy and practice that enable open knowledge to flourish

  • Support and enable individual organisations to adopt more open policies and practice
  • Promote and facilitate sector-level change towards open knowledge
  • Work with national and international partners to build the case for free knowledge
  • Advocate for open knowledge within the UK’s public policy and legislative arena
  • Contribute to international advocacy activities and programmes as appropriate

Progress

[edit]
  • Planned an afternoon of talks and workshops at the Open University, with Anna Comas-Quinn, themed on Wikipedia in Higher Education and with a focus on Wikipedia in Language Teaching and Translation. This will take place on 18 November 2020 with Dr. Sara Thomas and Dr. Richard Nevell from Wikimedia UK also presenting. These all went well with requests for further Wikipedia translation workshops and conferences being discussed.
  • The advocacy of Wikidata supporting Digital Humantiies is progressing well. There is an ongoing collaboration with Dr. Chris Langley, Newman University in England, and Professor Mikki Brock, Washington & Lee University, Virginia USA. Stewart Cromar, Interactive Content Team Manager at University of Edinburgh, is helping us create a Wikidata-driven website to visualise all the data added to Wikidata as part of the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project. A new 'proof of concept' map website was developed and launched on 11 December 2020. Read more about the project here: Introducing Mapping the Scottish Reformation: Clerics, Manuscripts, and Open Data on the Wikimedia UK blog. Further work on the site and collaborations are expected.
  • Emma Carroll, former Data & Visualisation student intern on the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches Project, presented on the project at the second ever Remembering the Accused Witches of Scotland (RAWS) Conference on 8 November 2020 as the growing movement to memorialise what happened to these women grows and RAWS becomes a registered charity. There was great enthusiasm for the Map of Accused Witches Project with many suggestions for how this work could be expanded and improved further with additional data and iconography to help plot memorials for these witches on the map.
  • The Map of Accused Witches Project and the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project work to date has meant that the library team at Oregon Stat University have contacted us to have a meeting to discuss how best to begin a Wikidata mapping project in the same vein. A meeting was held on 14 December 2020 with their whole project team just before the resident went on annual leave.
  • Second draft of a chapter on the work we do at the University of Edinburgh to address gender inequality has been submitted and reviewed. Third draft to be submitted 11 January 2021.

Further review and funded development is to take place in 2021.
