Objectives[edit]

Briefly outline how the projects delivered link with the general objectives of the residency, and the Wikimedia UK’s mission. This section may stay the same for the whole of the projects unless objectives change

Wikimedia UK's objectives Residency's objectives
G1: Develop Open Knowledge Be an advocate or open knowledge within the University's collections and community, which would enrich Wikipedia and sister projects and enhance the University's role in open knowledge and public engagement. Identify opportunities for content improvement and image releases.
G2a: Develop, involve & engage WMUK volunteers Organise and host workshops for University staff, students and public to enable them to directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles.
G3: Reduce barriers to accessing open knowledge Design and manage a programme of activities to improve collaboration between the Institution and Wikimedia UK and Wikimedia community, leading to a sustainable relationship and more joint projects in the future.
G5: Develop, support and engage with other Wikimedia & Open Knowledge Communities Be an advocate for open knowledge with the University, for example by working with Library & University Collections to develop or change policies (e.g. Access and Reuse of Digital Collections), systems or processes which would allow greater collaboration between Wikimedia UK and the University. Create best practice documents as needed.

Outcomes[edit]

  • This month has been slightly shorter given I took time off from 3rd August to 15th August 2016 immediately following the Wikidata & Wikisource Showcase on 1st & 2nd August and the 6 month review meeting on 3rd August 2016. The period prior to this from 12th July to 31st July 2016 focused on laying the foundations for the many editathon events we have planned for Autumn/Winter this year as well as preparing for & promoting the Wikidata & Wikisource Showcase for Repository Fringe 2016.

  • I also lead a Eurostemcell Wikipedia editathon session with Dr. Cathy Southworth at the Centre for Regenerative Medicine on 20th July which make links with the Wellcome Library residency and European partner labs. The expectation is that this will be a regular event every year for Stemcell Awareness Day and plans are already in place to hold another Wikipedia editing session in conjunction with European partner labs in Denmark later this Autumn.

  • I have finalised arrangements with sixteen learning technologists and academic support librarians to arrange a 'Train the Trainer' event for 23rd August.

  • I submitted an entry for the NCCPE Public Engagement competition 2016 detailing how the Wikimedia residency brings people together to engage with research..

  • I have continued discussions with Dr. Charlotte Bosseaux of the Translation Studies MSc course who is keen to use Wikipedia's Content Translation tool in next semester's course. I also continued to liaised with Professor Alexander Chow who wishes to include a Wikipedia assignment in next semester's World Christianity postgraduate taught course and a Women in Religion editathon on 2nd November. I have liaised with both Course Leaders and contacts at Wiki Education to resolve issues relating to Content Translation and Word Count.

  • I attended a Wikimedia UK Course Leaders Event in London on 19th July where it was agreed we needed to communicate & share information about the courses being run in different Higher Education institutions. The action point was to create a new central webpage on the Wikimedia UK site to refer to which would detail past courses, current courses & courses planned for the future the length and breadth of the UK along with any useful resources.

  • Lancaster University made contact looking for a Wikimedian in their area so they could run an editathon so we put them in touch with one. Phil Barker at Heriot Watt is going to look into proposing they have their own Wikimedian. I continue to liaise with Sheffield University so they can run their own Sheffield Gothic editathon. Leeds University attended the Wikisource & Wikidata Showcase and are interested in releasing Bronte letters to Wikisource and to work with the National Library of Wales' Wikidata Visiting Scholar (also based at Leeds University) so we have put them in touch with one another.

  • I have continued my Skype sessions with Richard Nevell at WMUK in addition to Histropedia's Navino Evans, the National Library of Wales' Jason Evans and the Bodleian Library's Wikimedian in Residence Martin Poulter. This has assisted with the arrangements & content for the Wikisource & Wikidata Showcase on 2nd August.

  • Following discussions with Eugenia Twomey and Annie Caldwell, I created a simplified University of Edinburgh pdf guide to uploading images to Wikimedia Commons. Annie Caldwell is going to take high quality pictures of buildings around Edinburgh and upload them to Wikicommons.

  • I also set up & attended working group meetings to discuss the upcoming events for Edinburgh Gothic, Samhain and Ada Lovelace Day editathons.

  • Finally, I am to be interviewed by Beck Pitt of Opening Educational Practices in Scotland on 31st August 2016.
