Progress

Update on the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches project - new student intern began work on 5 June 2023

• Our previous intern, Claire Panella, worked 22 February 2023 to 10 May 2023 0.2FTE and has blogged about her experience and created a markdown document in R for anyone wishing to quality assure the data in Wikidata when comparing csvs from it with csvs from the 'golden copy' of information in the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database. She has also created a sample 'change log' to keep track of any changes made to Wikidata and/or the Survey database so we can better track of amendments in the longer term.
• 8 x interviews were held w/c 10 April 2023 to recruit our next 'Witchfinder General' Data Visualisation intern for Summer 2023 (12 weeks 1.0FTE from 5 June 2023) with Ruby Imrie successfully appointed to the role.
• A new Wikidata project page has been set up.
• Ruby has been using R to compare Wikidata with the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft to quality assure the witchcraft data. Checked datasets are marked with a Y on the Wikidata project page.
• E. McAndrew has imported over 10 additional dataset imports in Wikidata from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft which are detailed on the Wikidata project page.
• Ruby has also been working with our Web Developer colleagues on adding 1750 historical map layers, fixing sire bugs + UX changes to the new version of the site: test.witches.is.ed.ac.uk and conducted UX test sessions with historians, student interns and Witches of Scotland podcasters.
• Ruby's full-time internship is due to come to an end of 25 August 2023 so she has been extended to continue work on a 0.2 FTE basis from w/c 11 September 2023 until May 2024 to continue to (1) quality assure the witchcraft data in Wikidata (2) improve the site design and UX experience and (3) build new features e.g. an AI chat interface if possible.
• E. McAndrew has created a Witch tour of Edinburgh (to be finalised) as a Leaflet storymap, and a torture methods ‘explainer’ (to be co-created with Professor Julian Goodare) to highlight how women were made to confess to witchcraft in early modern Scotland. Liaising with Professor Julian Goodare on a final versions.

Assassin’s Creed and History of (Islamic) Art images

• Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art, worked on the new Assassin’s Creed video game to help illustrate and educate about the History of Baghdad. (The Ubisoft press release has got quite a lot of press). Glaire was thrilled that we were able to get Khalili Collections involved in the project so offers a million thanks to E.McAndrew and the OER Service for connecting her with the Wikimedian for the Khalilli Collections, Dr. Martin Poulter, in 2022 during a University of Edinburgh student assignment. Glaire is looking to discuss the third iteration of the History of Art Wikipedia assignment for the next Caliphs course and/or through my Digital Lab in the coming year.

Ada Lovelace Day – celebrating Women in STEM

• E.McAndrew is involved in a working group and planning discussions to run a Wikipedia editing event for Ada Lovelace Day (10 October 2023) and has reached out to former student intern, Maggie Lin, to present a lightning talk on the day as well as STEM student societies.

Women in Red workshops

One new Women in Red workshop was held on Friday 30th June 2023 - our 74th monthly workshop at the university came with tea, coffee and biscuits!

• 74 new articles were created from the 30 June 2023 event. Pages created included Meg Dow (died 1590). She was charged with infanticide and witchcraft in April 1590 and was subsequently executed at Castlehill, Edinburgh. The Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database lists her age at the time as 9 years old.Margaret Gillespie (singer), n. Duncan (12 December 1841 - 1913) was a Scottish singer of traditional songs. She was a major informant for The Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection, contributing 466 songs. Also Margaret Runcie born Margaret Mary Power (19 October 1925 – 23 December 2022) was a Scottish-based pony breeder who won 18 Gold Medals at the Royal Highland Show. Issobell Fergussone or Isobel Ferguson was a Scottish woman who confessed to witchcraft in Dalkeith, Edinburgh during the year 1661.

Another Women in Red workshop was held on Friday 28th July 2023 - our 75th monthly workshop at the university came with tea, coffee and biscuits!

• 47 new articles were created from the 28 July 2023 event. Pages created included Ta-Kr-Hb, a female mummy who was donated to the Perth Museum and Art Gallery in Scotland in 1936, believed to be the remains of a princess or priestess of Thebes. Also Anna Tait or Anne Tait, also known as 'Hononni', was accused of witchcraft in Haddington, East Lothian in 1634 and executed in 1635. Her case revolved around her feelings of grief and guilt which caused her suicidal thoughts for the murder of her first husband and the death of her beloved daughter following a botched home abortion. Also Alison Robinson (24 February 1938 - 10 October 2022), a ceramicist who spent a lot of her life and work in Edinburgh. In 2009 she founded Bridge Pottery Collective to ensure that young ceramists had an environment to work and share their art. Ans Annie Johnston (folklorist) (10 February 1886 - 6 March 1963), a Gaelic folklorist who contributed a variety of songs and stories from her native Barra to song collections and scholarly works in the early and mid-20th century.She was known for her expertise on waulking songs (òrain ruaidh), as well as her contributions to Marjory Kennedy-Fraser's well-known collection Songs of the Hebrides.

Partnership interactions

• Next phase of the Mapping the Scottish Reformation Wikidata project with Dr. Chris Langley (formerly of Newman University, Birmingham and now at the Open University) and Professor Mikki Brock (Washington and Lee University, USA) Update for 15 August 2023: Chris and Mikki are preparing an AHRC research proposal and want LTW to be a key part of developing the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project and taking it to the next 2.0 stage. Discussions underway about the capacity for our web developers to be involved or not.
• The OER Service is supporting the University of Oxford's Their Finest Hour project to digitise and collect the testimonies and digitally capture WW2 artefacts for a WW2 archive follwowing the success of the WW1 Lest we forget project. E. McAndrew has discussed about being involved and seeing if some stories and images can be shared to Wikimedia though the project's Non-Commerical Creative Commons licence looks a barrier in some respects.

This image now has 243,206 pageviews on English Wikipedia for January 2023, 70,604 pageviews on the German Wikipedia article and 31,982 pageviews on the Japanese Wikipedia article.

Strategic Aim 2 - Information Literacy

• Support the education sector’s engagement with Wikimedia as a digital literacy tool

Progress

Wikimedia in the Curriculum - current work

• Six new case studies can now be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art, and Evelyn Balsells PhD, Global Health Challenges Pg Online, have signed off on their case studies and images to be used. Graphic designer, Nicky Greenhorn, has submitted a new proof design has been provided with amendments. Lorna Campbell and E.McAndrew met in April 2023 to discuss the booklet and have been working on changes to be effected in May 2023. update 15 August - Have asked for update on proof design from Nicky Greenhorn.
• The Reproductive Biology BSc Wikipedia assignment will not go ahead in academic year 2023/2024 according to course organiser Dr. Agnes Stefansdottir, owing to a packed course schedule. They will revisit this decision again for 2024/2025 as the course organisers are very positive about working with the residency and the learning outcomes being delivered. This particular assignment has been running every year for the last seven years so it is felt this makes a good time to review the last seven years and write up an article about the past work.
• Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment to commence on 27 September 2023 with 70 Masters students being trained how to contribute 2,000-2,500 word translations of high quality Wikipedia articles to another language Wikipedia by mid January 2024.
• Renewing collaborations with History of Art's Dr. Glaire Anderson and initiating new collaboration with Professor Charles West, Online History MSc, are both under discussion.

Conferences

• No new conference news this month. Considering submitting proposal for WikidataCon and Wikimania in 2024 on the Map of Accused Witches in Scotland project and 3 years of the Edinburgh Award.

Wikipedia Editing - Edinburgh Award year review

• Dates are set for the new 2023/2024 Edinburgh Award for Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia and new sessions to help guide the students in place for a) learning how to edit b) settling on an agreed project plan of attack and c) mutually agreeing final project targets. New Student Internships

• Ruby Imrie has been appointed (12 weeks 1.0 FTE) to do more work on the Map of Accused Witches Wikidata project as our third Summer Witchfinder General: Data Visualisation intern. Start date of 5 June 2023 and finish date 25 August 2023. This has now received a 0.2FTE extension during term time to start 11 September 2023 until May 2024.
• Interviewing a p/t role of Assistant Wikimedian in Residence to support the work of the residency in the longer term (events management and promotion, community building for Women in Red and Edinburgh Award, outreach to different geographically distant parts of the university and more) on a 1 year 0.2-0.4FTE basis. This role will be re-advertised in mid September 2023. Awaiting confirmation from Unitemps as to when the readvertisement is live.

The University of Edinburgh's Digital Skills team have requested a list of upcoming Wikimedia workshops for Semester 1 (2023/2024) and E.McAndrew has prepared a list of dates and workshop descriptors to tie in with this upocming semester's themed approach including:

• 7 new articles were created from the 25 July 2023 staff training event. Pages created included Helen Guthrie (accused witch) (died c. December 1662) was the last woman suspected of being a witch to be executed in Forfar, Scotland. Also Euphemia Johnston (born 1824) a Scottish Lady's nurse who attended Princess Helena, the daughter of Queen Victoria, at the birth of her first child in 1867. And Jessie King (or Kean) (27 March 1861 - 11 March 1889) was a Scottish laundress and baby farmer in Edinburgh who was found guilty of murdering three children. She was the last woman to be hanged in Edinburgh. In the years after her death, scholars have debated when King was actually guilty or not.

• E.McAndrew attended the June meeting for the Gender.Ed steering group and advocated for everyone involved in Gender Studies, Gender Research and promoting gender equality at the University to collaborate on existing projects (e.g. The Map of Witches Wikidata project, Student Experience Grant projects, Ada Lovelace Day working group discussions and more) and also feel free to suggest additional collaborations.
• E.McAndrew to present at the BioClocks Wikipedia editathon on 5 October 2023 following the success of the Society of Experimental Biology editahon earlier this Summer.

• Professor Charles West, formerly of University of Sheffield, is joining the University of Edinburgh in July 2023 and has been discussing a student assignment for the Online History MSc with the Wikimedian in Residence for Semester 1 (session 2023/2024).
• Hemangini Gupta, Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Politics and International Relations has requested holding an editing event in December 2023 with Gender.Ed's European partners at freie Uni, Berlin who organize a #4GenderStudies event on Dec 18 every year to promote Gender Studies in the Academy. The idea is to edit pages about feminist authors on the web and/or pages related to gender studies.
• Dr. Terri Ochiagha, Lecturer in Global Anglophone Literatures, wants to apply for research grant for January to December impact project where University of Edinburgh students improve topic coverage of author Chinua Achebe and his works on Wikipedia over several sessions.
